Three volumes of The War, a weekly publication between the years of 1812-1814 by S. (Samuel) Woodworth & Co., New York. The 1817 issue was printed by C. (Charles) N. Baldwin, New York. Missing from the collection are Nos. 1-3 of Vol. I, No. 26 of Vol. II, and Nos. 14-15 of Vol. III. The newspaper's contributors reported on the War of 1812 not only from New York, but other U.S. cities, Canada, and the Europe. Published accounts include journals and letters, names of military personnel and battles, as well as action of American privateers, and involvement of Native Americans (M 029). The first and third publication of the Waterford News and one article from the Blue Ridge Herald. The Waterford News, a Quaker pro-Union newspaper published in Waterford, Va., contains articles reporting skirmishes and battles in and around Waterford, stories and classified ads revealing economic strains, poems to Abraham Lincoln, and parodies of Southern news items. The 1955 Blue Ridge Herald printed in Purcellville, Va., reports Kay Kitagawa's rediscovery of the first two Waterford newspapers (28 May 1864 and 11 June 1864) among the Lincoln papers at the Library of Congress (SC 0014). The Washington Times began its "The Civil War" series in 1991. It has had a number of frequent contributors, including John Hunt Morgan Roberts (d. 1999). After more than a decade, the supplement continues to be published today. "The Civil War" newspaper articles in the collection span from 6 July 1996 to 29 Oct. 2005. Each supplement is published on a single page containing one to three articles. The series is particularly concerned with anecdotes from Civil War soldiers, generals, and battles. However, it also takes note of battlefields and other period historical sites that are currently vulnerable to encroaching development. It contains notices of upcoming events, including battlefield commemorations and Civil War conferences in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and the District of Columbia. The series also includes Civil War book reviews, as well as articles concerning the medical, industrial, and technological advances that helped shape the war and its outcome (M 035).

The collection contains an invitation to dinner and two letters describing Woodworth's family life, his poor health, charity benefits on his behalf, and his opinions on politics, death and religion. A letter from scholar Nelson Adkins to collector Frank Pleadwell discusses one of the above letters. A lithograph of Woodworth completes the collection.

The collection consists of letters, manuscripts, documents, 28 photographs and 3 scrapbooks related to the life, family and career of Selim Edwin Woodworth. Subject matter includes Woodworth's service at sea: a journal kept aboard the ship "Margaret Oakley" from New York to the South Pacific in 1834-35, the log of the ship "Ohio" in the Mediterranean (1838-39), and naval orders from the Civil War period. There are also San Francisco business papers of Selim and his brother, Frederick A. Woodworth and mining papers for the Blue Wing Quartz Mine in Calaveras County, California (1860-64).

This group includes a handwritten copy of Samuel Woodworth's poem or song, THE HUNTERS OF KENTUCKY, probably copied by Payne Pettebone, June 30, 1829. Pettebone's name is written on the handwritten copy several times, once identifying the document as his property. An undated typescript of the verse is also present. The verse refers to the "hunters" rallying to General Andrew Jackson's banner in the War of 1812.
