The collection consists of letters, manuscripts, documents, 28 photographs and 3 scrapbooks related to the life, family and career of Selim Edwin Woodworth. Subject matter includes Woodworth's service at sea: a journal kept aboard the ship "Margaret Oakley" from New York to the South Pacific in 1834-35, the log of the ship "Ohio" in the Mediterranean (1838-39), and naval orders from the Civil War period. There are also San Francisco business papers of Selim and his brother, Frederick A. Woodworth and mining papers for the Blue Wing Quartz Mine in Calaveras County, California (1860-64).

Selim E. Woodworth, United States naval officer and son of poet Samuel Woodworth, led the rescue of the Donner Party shortly after his arrival in San Francisco in the winter of 1847. He was elected to the California State Senate in 1849, became president of the San Francisco Committee of Vigilance in 1851, and re-entered the Navy to serve as an officer in the United States fleet on the Mississippi River during the Civil War.
