Physician, lawyer, historian.

Thompson was born in Setauket, N.Y. where he practiced medicine until 1818; after 1821 he practiced law in Hempstead, N.Y. His HISTORY OF LONG ISLAND was first published in 1839. His father was Samuel Thompson (d. 1811); his younger half-brother was Samuel Ludlow Thompson.
