Many of the letters indicate "copy" or "duplicate." The letters are written in various hands; it is not always clear which are in Mathew's autograph. The letters are addressed to and from various locations in England and Ireland. The letter from Tisdall is written at the top of a print of the "Intended New Parochial Church of St. Andrew, Dublin," with another print of a different viewpoint of the same church pasted at the bottom of the first print (48). Other items include two envelopes addressed to G.C.H. Lewis [George Henry Lewis?] at 10 Ely Place, Holborn, postmarked 18[6?]5 and 1875 (57-58); a clipping about Charles James Mathews appearing in San Francisco, dated March 19, 1871 (59); a very short piece, "The gentleman with a cough" (60); an IOU for £25. Dated May 12, 1855 and signed by C.J. Mathews and E. Glover, Esq. (61); a promissory note to pay Charles Mathews £38-18, dated April 17, 1847 and signed by John Williams Cole (62); two leaves of notes entitled "Extracts from Fitzball," after night rehearsal, dates from Oct. 6-11 [no year] (63); a farewell address to the provinces (64); brief fragmentary notes (65-66).

A collection of documents on the early history of Connecticut assembled by Wolcott Griswold Lane as a memorial to his father, William Griswold Lane. The original bequest consisted of approximately 1,000 letters and papers (1670-1866) of the Lane and Griswold families of Connecticut and Ohio. Families represented in the correspondence include: Daggett, Dana, Edwards, Ellsworth, Fish, Goodrich, Hillhouse, Huntington, Lanman, Sherman, Stiles, Swayne, Swift, Trumbull, Waite, Whittlesey, Williams, Wolcott, and Woodbridge. The papers of Augustus Henry Griswold make up another substantial part of the collection and include temperance lectures, stories, and ships' account books (1811-1836). Also in the collection are legal and financial papers (1797-1840) relating to the building and reconstruction of the wharf in New Haven, the account books (1793-1818) of Avery & Tracy, general merchants of Norwich, Connecticut, as well as the day books (1773-1794) of Samuel Avery and his tailoring business. Other major additions are whaling logs (1850-1859), a memorial on the need for a pest house in New Haven (1785), papers of the Rowland family of Fairfield, Connecticut, letters of Jabez Huntington, major general of the Connecticut militia during the Revolutionary War, and fourteen letters (1838-1876) from President Rutherford B. Hayes to William Griswold Lane.

Also included in the collection are two dime novels written by Neal: Little Moccasin and the White-Faced Pacer, and several bound scrapbooks containing clippings of his work.
