Title:
Howard Haines Brinton and Anna Shipley Cox Brinton papers, 1859-2005.
The collection includes genealogical, biographical and autobiographical materials relating to Anna Shipley Cox Brinton and Howard Haines Brinton. There are letters from Anna Brinton from her early youth, through her boarding school days at Westtown School, receipt of her Ph. D. from Stanford University and service in the feeding program in Germany and Poland under the A.F.S.C., family life, academic career, travel under Quaker concerns, especially to Japan and work as co-director of Pendle Hill. Anna Brinton's correspondents include: American Friends Service Committee personnel, Minnie Bowles, various Brinton family members, Henry Cadbury, various Cox family members, Hans Freund, Joan Mary Fry, Anna Hartshorne, Mary Hoxie Jones, Rufus M. Jones, Hertha Kraus, Margarethe Lachmund, Mills College personnel. There is an accumulation of information prepared by AB on classical studies, specifically on Virgil and Horace and including some drawings by AB, her trip to Europe and Asia, including China, in 1946, Anna Brinton's notebooks from the period in Japan in 1953-54, as well as in Korea in 1954 and on travel home through Hawaii in 1954. This is separate from the diaries which she kept from 1936-1954, and then appointment-book style diaries, 1955- 1968. There are also glass slides of silhouettes of Quakers and photographs taken in Japan, as well as miscellaneous materials, including Christmas cards hand-drawn by ASCB. The collection continues with the correspondence of Howard Brinton, from his early youth, then teaching at Guilford College in North Carolina, his work with the feeding program of the AFSC in Germany (1920-21), his marriage to ASCB and the birth of their children, teaching at Mills College in California, the trip to Japan and finally, settling in as co-director of Pendle Hill (1936). He maintained connections and interest in many Japanese friends and acquaintances. Brinton writes about his publications, his beliefs, lectures, and his marriage to Yuki Takahashi (1972). HHB's early letters are primarily to his parents, then also to Anna and Anna's parents. His correspondents include: Stephen Hobhouse, Yukio Irie, Rufus Jones, Walter Miles, Douglas Steere and many others. In addition to HHB correspondence are his book reviews and contracts, notes and research on topics of interest to him, manuscripts, typescripts and published articles, juvenilia, poems, lectures and diaries. Many of these deal with the theme of American Quakerism. As well are materials relating to his academic life at Haverford College, Harvard University, Pickering and Mills Colleges. There are documents and pictures relating to the German and Spanish feeding program relating to both HHB and ASCB. Included here are some unusual photographs from Almora Gaza accompanied by a note suggesting that AFSC had a project with refugees in Gaza. In the papers of Alvin J. Cox, arranged with Cox family materials, are photographs of Philippine natives probably taken in 1917 when Cox was visiting on an inspection trip of the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources as Director of the Bureau of Science. The photographs are of the Igorot people of the Philippines.

Title:
Henry J. Cadbury papers 1866-1987.
This collection of materials by and about Henry Cadbury (1883-1974) contains information about his extended family, including the Cadbury, Head, Kaign, Shinn and Warder families consisting of charts and notes. Biographically, there is information on his academic degrees and awards and miscellaneous materials, such as his passports, his certificate of identity as Relief Commissioner for the American Friends Service Committee, ca. 1920, and biographical sketches of him as well as memorial minutes at the time of his death. The correspondence series opens with letters written by Cadbury as a youth to his family beginning in 1892, then as a college and graduate student and newly-minted teacher. A number of letters were written while he was on vacation in Switzerland in 1912. A significant group of letters was written by him when he served as Relief Commissioner for the AFSC in Germany in 1920, reporting on the work and AFSC personnel involved in relief operations, as well as on people he met. By this time, his letters were also directed to his wife of four years, Lydia Caroline Brown Cadbury. The period of his letter writing jumps to 1940 and then spans until his death in 1974. The section of correspondence containing letters written to Henry Cadbury is arranged alphabetically and includes a group of very full letters from Lydia Cadbury, as well as by a number of people at Haverford College on library issues and from Haverford Pres. John Coleman wishing to celebrate Cadbury's 93rd birthday at the college. While there are many other letter writers, some names include: Anna Brinton, Howard Brinton, John Nickalls, Norman Penney and Douglas Steere. There is a small group of diaries (1896-1898), notes on topics of interest to Cadbury and text for a few speeches he made between 1944-1974, and the text of lectures he gave at Pendle Hill, an adult study center in Wallingford, Pa. in 1954. The greatest part of this collection includes actual writings by Henry Cadbury, including annotated galleys and page proofs for The Book of Acts in History, his "History of Quakers in Jamaica" and "Negro Membership in the Society of Friends," "New Light from Old Scrolls" from his work on the Dead Sea scrolls and others. Another series is devoted to materials collected by Margaret Hope Bacon toward her biography of Henry Cadbury, Let This Life Speak. Another series consists of photographs, primarily of Cadbury from youth to old age, as well as of members of his family, and groups of which he was a part, such as Westtown School and Haverford College, and a sizable number taken during his vacation in Switzerland in 1912. There are also photographs of other Cadbury family members, as well as members of the Balderston, Brown, Canby, Carter, Gibbins, Roudolph, Shinn, Shipley, Troth and Winterbottom families. The collection concludes with an alphabetized list of writers of letters of sympathy on the death of Henry Cadbury to Lydia Cadbury in 1974-75.

Brown, Caroline Cadbury, 1851-1914. Cadbury-Brown family papers, additions, 1849-1919 [manuscript]
Title:
Cadbury-Brown family papers, additions, 1849-1919 [manuscript]
Much of the addition to the Cadbury-Brown papers in boxes 3-5 consists of letters between Caroline Cadbury (1851-1914) and Thomas Kite Brown (1851-1929) during their engagement, about 130 written by Caroline and 115 by Thomas. As their engagement was prolonged over three years, the letters show the progression of their relationship. Some letters include small pressed flowers or samples of fabric from new clothes Caroline is sewing for herself. Some of Tom's 1875 letters offer a glimpse into the life of a nineteenth-century teacher at Westtown School. Other letters touch on the couple's intellectual interests and spiritual strivings. Included in Box 4 are two tin type portraits believed to be of Thomas K. Brown. There are also letters between Caroline's parents Richard Cadbury (1825-1897) and Lydia Comfort Shinn (1828-1904) during their own engagement, as well as letters from Caroline to her mother, describing her early married life, and later ones to her children, written during a 1906 tour of Europe. Miscellaneous items include an invitation to the wedding of Caroline Cadbury and Thomas K. Brown, Caroline's will, pages from the diary of Caroline's daughter, and letters to and from other members of the Cadbury-Brown family. Much of the addition in boxes 6-21 consists of the approximately five hundred letters from Caroline Cadbury Brown (1851-1914). Correspondents include her children, brother, father, aunts, and cousins, but most of these letters are to her mother, Lydia Comfort Shinn Cadbury (1828-1904), and her husband, Thomas Kite Brown (1851-1929). There are also many letters from Thomas and Lydia to Caroline. With these two correspondents in particular, Caroline discusses such topics as the tasks of housekeeping, the progress of her children, and religious views. The letters from Caroline to Thomas during 1888 and 1889, however, show a different side of her. As she is resting for her health in Clifton Springs, New York, she discusses her mental state as well as frustrations with her children and position in life. Letters from the children of Caroline Cadbury and Thomas Kite Brown are also included in this addition. The letters of Richard Cadbury Brown, Shipley Brown, and Thomas Kite Brown, Jr. offer glimpses into life at Haverford College during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The letters of Bertha Brown do the same for Bryn Mawr College. Many of the children go abroad, and in their letters home discuss the Quakers they meet in different parts of the world and the cultural differences that they perceive. Several of Lydia's diaries detail her daily life. There are also letters from Caroline's brother, Richard Tapper Cadbury, her father, Richard Cadbury Sr., her aunt Anna Shinn, and cousin Sue Shipley. There are several letters from other friends and family members to the Cadbury Brown family. Miscellaneous items include photographs, silk gloves, and programs for various concerts and exhibitions.
