Davidson, Thomas, 1840-1900. Thomas Davidson papers, 1857-1948 (inclusive), 1857-1902 (bulk).
Title:
Thomas Davidson papers, 1857-1948 (inclusive), 1857-1902 (bulk).
Correspondence, lectures, articles, printed matter, clippings, and film relating to the career of Davidson who came to the U.S. in 1867 and was associated with the St. Louis and Concord schools of philosophy, the founding of the Fellowship of the New Life, and the establishment of the Breadwinners' College. From 1878 to 1884, he was in Italy studying the writings of Antonio Rosmini-Serbati, about whom he published a study in 1882. The major portion of the papers is made up of correspondence, including letters from Henry Adams, John Dewey, Oliver Wendell Holmes, William James, Henry Cabot Lodge, John Stuart Mill, and Stephen Samuel Wise. Only a few pages of his diary of 1858 survive. Also with the papers is material from Edward Endelman, a student of Davidson's. Of particular interest is Endelman's correspondence about Davidson with William T. Harris, a Hegelian philosopher who had been a close friend of Davidson's. In addition, two reels of microfilm collected by John Roemischer which contain letters and articles by Davidson in other repositories have been added to the papers.

Henderson, Alice Corbin, 1881-1949. Papers, 1861-1987 (bulk 1920-1949).
Title:
Papers, 1861-1987 (bulk 1920-1949).
The collection comprises correspondence, literary manuscripts, notes and notebooks, clippings, galley proofs, photographs, and date books ranging in date from 1861-1987, reflecting various aspects of not only Henderson's life, but also those of her husband, artist and architect William Penhallow Henderson, and her daughter, Alice Oliver Henderson Evans Rossin Colquitt. Henderson's published and unpublished works are represented by transcripts, notes, galley proofs, and clippings, and her involvement with Poetry: A Magazine of Verse (1912-22) and the Poetry anthologies are reflected in correspondence with editor Harriet Monroe, Ezra Pound, and attorney Roberts Walker. Other correspondents include: Witter Bynner, D.H. and Frieda Lawrence, Vachel Lindsay, Mary Austin, Edgar Lee Masters, Haniel Long, Carl Sandburg, and Ralph Fletcher Seymour, among others. There is extensive family correspondence, notably with Mabel Dodge Luhan, especially during periods of financial and marital difficulity in the 1930s. After Alice and William Henderson moved to Santa Fe, NM, in 1916, they became interested in Native American issues, especially those surrounding the local Navajos. Through their individual talents, the Hendersons founded or supported projects such as the Poet's Round-up, the Navajo House of Religion (now the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian), the Eugene Manlove Rhodes Memorial Association, the Writer's Edition, the Works Progress Administration Federal Writers' Project guide to New Mexico, and the Pueblo-Spanish Building Company, all of which are represented in the collection. Alice Henderson Rossin continued much of her parents' work. She revived the Poet's Round-up in 1968, exhibited her father's art works, and worked with both of her parents' biographers. Her personal correspondence, primarily from the 1930s, includes letters from King Vidor, Lady Bird Johnson, Oliver La Farge, R.F. Seymour, and Jouett and Dorothea Todd, as well as family members. Rossin served as a board member of the Museum of New Mexico Foundation from 1962-78. Family correspondence that she added to this collection includes letters between her second mother-in-law, Clara Rossin, and composer Ernest Bloch, music critic Lawrence Gilman, and violinist Joseph Szigeti, 1912-28.

Harry Buxton Forman manuscript material : 60 items, 1877-1913
Title:
Harry Buxton Forman manuscript material : 60 items 1877-1913
Harry Buxton Forman, English bibliographer and forger. He wrote a great deal of critical and bibliographic literary scholarship throughout his life, most notably on Shelley and Keats, all the while maintaining a career in the Post Office. In 1886 Forman met fellow bibliographer T. J. Wise through the Shelley Society, and the two began secretly printing counterfeit publications of works of famous authors, subsequently validating the authenticity of the books through their own bibliographic works. Their scheme remained largely undetected until nearly two decades after Forman's death, with the publication of John Carter and Graham Pollard's Enquiry into the Nature of Certain Nineteenth Century Pamphlets. The Harry Buxton Forman manuscript material in the Pforzheimer collection consists of writings and correspondence. The writings include: the holograph text of his Memoir of Shelley, as published in the 1892 Aldine edition of Shelley's works ; papers relating to his "The Building of the Idylls," an essay on Tennyson ; and over a dozen essays and works of criticism on Shelley or Shelley-related publications. The correspondence is dated from between 1877 and 1913, and mostly discusses Shelley scholarship. Correspondents include: Paola Clairmont, niece of Claire Clairmont ; Mary Cowden Clarke, literary scholar and writer ; E. J. Trelawny, writer and adventurer ; and Thomas James Wise, book collector and forger.

Thomas Davidson papers, 1857-1948, 1857-1902
Title:
Thomas Davidson papers 1857-1948 1857-1902

Century Company records
Title:
Century Company records
The Century Company published the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, which was widely regarded as the best general periodical of its time, performing a role as cultural arbiter during the 1880s and 1890s. It was founded in New York City in 1881 and also published the children's magazine St. Nicholas, dictionaries, and books. The Century Company records date from 1870 to the 1930s and chiefly contain correspondence with contributors, readers, public figures, and literary agents. A number of manuscripts and proofs in the collection are extensively edited and taken with annotations on letters provide a detailed record of the outlook, standards, and functions of the company.
