Five seperate accessions of materials relating to the Van Schaick and related families. The papers contain materials that relate to the family's business and land dealings. Included are deeds, leases and agreements for the sale and lease of family lands and the lease of lands by family members from other landowners. Several of the business papers from the eighteenth century contain information on the sale and purchase of slaves. Other materials include bills and reciepts, correspondence, ledgers and journals, household account journals and surveys of family lands.

Title: Gansevoort-Lansing collection, 1650-1919, bulk (1800-1899).

Collection consists chiefly of papers of the Gansevoort, Lansing and Melville families and reflects the social, business and political interaction between family members and friends and associates of the families. Also included are some papers of members of the Sanford, Van Schaick and other related families. Subjects include business and financial matters, social events, family news, and current events. Melville family papers document the family of Herman Melville (1819-1891), author of Moby Dick and other works. The bulk of these papers consists of correspondence among three generations of both Melville and Gansevoort family members detailing the lives and daily activities of the writers who include Herman Melville and his father, Allan Melvill (1782-1835). Some manuscripts of Melville's writings also are in the collection.

Title: Treaty between the Onondaga Tribe and the State of New York, 1788 Sept. 12.

This treaty establishes the Onondaga Indian Reservation. The agreement was that The Onondagas ceded all their lands to the people of the State of New York, forever. The Onondagas were paid 1,000 French crowns in money, and two hundred pounds in clothing. They also were to be paid $500 in silver annually. Signers include George Clinton, William Floyd, Ezra L'Hommedieu, Richard Varick, Samuel Jones, Egbert Benson, Peter Gansevoort, Jr., and chiefs and Indian representatives. Text begins: At a treaty held at Fort Schuyler, formerly called Fort Stanwix, in the State of New York, by his excellency George Clinton, governor of said state ... with the tribe or governor of Indians called the Onondagoes [sic] ...

Historic Cherry Hill. Philip Van Rensselaer Papers 1775-1798.

Title: Philip Van Rensselaer Papers 1775-1798.

Phillip Van Rensselaer built the Cherry Hill manor house and managed the large Cherry Hill estate. During the American Revolution Philip acted as the storekeeper for the Northern Department of the Continental Army. His papers reflect his activities in the management of the Cherry Hill estate as well as his activities as an important and influential figure in New York State politics and society. The papers also contain a large amount of correspondence and related material generated by Phillip in his capacity as storekeeper. The papers include correspondence, land papers, invoices and receipts, the contract and plans for the Cherry Hill Manor House, diaries and books of account. These papers are useful in documenting the activities associated with the management of the Cherry Hill estate as well as documenting the procurement and distribution of supplies for the Northern Department of the Continental Army during the American Revolution.

The lumber was to be used to build a stable. Gansevoort states that Larraway was acting on Van Rensselaer's behalf and requests Van Rensselaer to formally state the validity of Larraway's claim.

The Henry Glen Papers consist of fifteen letters written to Mr. Glen over a period of twenty years by family members and business acquaintences. All but one of the letters was written while Glen was a representative in Congress. Nine of the letters date between February 1795 and February 1796, including five discussing the Jay Treaty, from its arrival in Philadelphia through ratification and the ensuing political turmoil. Three additional letters discuss troop supply in northwestern New York.
