Knoll, Florence, 1917-. Florence Knoll Bassett papers, 1932-2000.
Title:
Florence Knoll Bassett papers, 1932-2000.
The papers of architect, and interior designer and planner Florence Knoll Bassett, measure approximately 2.5 linear feet dating from 1932 to 2000. The collection selectively documents Knoll Bassett's education and her career at Knoll Associates, Inc. from the 1940s until her resignation in 1965, in addition to personal design projects and other activities after leaving the company. It is an important source of information on the development of interior architecture and design from the 1940s to the 1970s, chronicling the Knoll mission to synthesize space, furniture, and design by creating interiors based on practical use, comfort, and aesthetics. The collection documents the growth of Knoll's international reputation for its modern furnishings and interiors and the impact of a business philosophy that encompassed design excellence, technological innovation, and mass production. The material includes a chronology of Knoll Bassett's career; a portfolio of sketches, drawings and designs; photographs of Knoll Bassett and others; subject files containing sketches and photographic material; letters from friends, colleagues, clients and others; awards received by Knoll Bassett throughout her career; and printed material. Much of the material is annotated with historical and biographical notes written by Knoll Bassett which provide invaluable contextual information for the materials found therein. The notes are dated 1999 in the Container Listing, under the assumption that they were written by Florence Knoll Bassett as she was arranging her archival papers.

Major issues faced by the museum during the period 1910-1946 are also reflected in the files, including the taxpayer's suit of 1914-1915 concerning city funding, transfer of the Detroit Museum of Art collections and property to the city of Detroit in 1919, acquisition of property on Woodward Avenue for a new museum site, construction of the new building, 1922-1927, and the Diego Rivera murals. Related institutions and programs are also covered, principally the Detroit School of Design, the Children's Museum and the World Adventure Series, as well as Burroughs' activities in the Federal Arts Project and the Scarab Club. The Archives of American Art has related material on the Federal Arts Projects and the Scarab Club, as well as a number of letters written to Burroughs by various artists.

Title:
35mm negative collection, 1936-1969.
Witman's 35mm negatives contain historic images of news events including the presidential campaigns of Roosevelt and Truman; the campaigns of Governor Lloyd Stark, Senator Stuart Symington, and St. Louis Mayor Barney Dickmann; and the Iron Curtain Speech by Winston Churchill. They contain photographs of St. Louis business and society leaders, and images of social events such as the Veiled Prophet Ball and the Municipal Opera. The negatives also include images of carnivals, baseball, boxing, Produce Row, steamboats, early aviation, a Negro baptism, horse racing, the unemployed, the military, war workers, union strikes, the state legislature, the Symphony, schools, scouts, colleges, the Art Museum, musicians, the police court, the public library, the city hospital, the morgue, the Zoo, and the prison. Witman also photographed the poor, the Ku Klux Klan, and blacks. One series documents the January 1939 Sharecroppers' Strike. Witman went to southern Missouri and photographed hundreds of sharecroppers and their families who had been evicted from their homes and were camping, with all their worldly possessions, along the rural highways as a dramatic demonstration of their desperate plight. Witman's work frequently included a full-page feature called "Candid Camera" that was modeled after Life Magazine.

Florence Knoll Bassett papers
Title:
Florence Knoll Bassett papers
The papers of architect, and interior designer and planner Florence Knoll Bassett, measure approximately 2 linear feet dating from 1932 to 2000. The material includes a chronology of Knoll Bassett's career; a portfolio of sketches, drawings and designs; photographs of Knoll Bassett and others; subject files containing sketches and photographic material; letters from friends, colleagues, clients and others; awards received by Knoll Bassett throughout her career; and printed material.Much of the material is annotated with historical and biographical notes written by Knoll Bassett which provide invaluable contextual information for the materials found therein. The notes are dated 1999 in the Container Listing, under the assumption that they were written by Florence Knoll Bassett as she was arranging her archival papers.
