The Sparks collection consists of original and transcribed historical documents and correspondence, chiefly concerning the American colonies and the original thirteen states, collected or transcribed beginning in 1819 by Jared Sparks. The collection includes the papers of Sir Francis Bernard and George Chalmers, letters of Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, the Marquis de Lafayette, and George Washington, the journals of Thomas Ainslie, the Board of Trade, the New York Provincial Congress and Conventions, as well as the papers and records from state public offices, among many others. The Sparks collection also contains his own historical essays and compositions, published articles, letter books, diaries, account books related to his college days, professional research, and material documenting his tenure as College president.

White, Lyman, 1800-1880. Stencil and ornament collection, 1818-ca.1900.

Title: Stencil and ornament collection, 1818-ca.1900.

A large assortment of stencils, as well as other designs, to be used in decorating furniture. Some of the designs have been pricked or perforated in order to transfer the outline to another surface. Many of the stencils show signs of having been used with bronzing powders. The designs include arrows, stars, shells, some mythological scenes, and name stencils for the piano makers Chickering & Sons and Hallet Davis & Co. Also with the collection is a wooden box which held various stenciling supplies, and a cone-shaped rock which was probably used for mixing paints. The stenciling supplies have been removed from the wooden box and housed separately. Among the supplies are bronzing powders, a container with combs which were probably used for graining, a pad, a stone, a brush, a knife, a burnishing tool, and some other miscellaneous supplies and tools. Lyman White's certificate of membership in the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanic Association is part of this collection, as is Jarvis White's certificate of completion of his apprenticeship, as attested by the Massachusetts Mechanic Association. As well, the collection includes two printers' style sheets, showing a variety of border patterns; a photo of Lyman White; price lists from Moody, Webster, & Co.'s Papier Mache works and from Robert Mayer & Co. for bronzing powders; printed plates from French books showing ornamental designs, part of an ad for the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanic Association's tenth exhibition; an advertising booklet of Chickering & Sons' piano-fortes (printed 1857); two drawings done by Lyman White in 1818; and a few other prints and newspaper articles.

Barstow, Rogers L. Bills and receipts, 1876-1889.

Title: Bills and receipts, 1876-1889.

Consists of over 400 receipted bills for the purchase of household and personal items by R. L. Barstow and other Barstow family members between 1876 and 1889. The firms represented were located primarily in Boston, Ma. and vicinity, although some items were purchased in London, England in 1880 and Paris, France in 1881. The majority of the bills are printed, most have illustrated billheads that depict a wide range of products as well as buildings. The categories represented include: building trades, ceramic and glassware, metal working trades, horse and carriage trades, ships and sails, trunks, carting, woodworking trades, artists, musical instruments, gardening, clothing trade, dry-goods, printers and engravers, toys, cigars and spirits, druggists, groceries, current accounts with Upham's Corner, hotels, booksellers, scientific apparatus, and miscellaneous items.

Steinway, William, 1836-1896. Diary, 1861-1896.

Title: Diary, 1861-1896.

In daily entries over 4 decades, Steinway describes the running of his family's piano business, the strikes and fights with his workers over wages, the alleged patent infringements of other piano companies (mainly Chickering) and his increasing involvement in N.Y.C. politics and public transportation planning. Also regularly described is Steinway's family life: the deterioration of his first marriage (1861-1876) as he learns of the indiscretions of his wife, his divorce, his attentions to his children, his second marriage in 1880 and his new family. His regular drinking and eating customs and his participation in German-American social clubs such as the Liederkranz are described almost daily, along with his health and the weather. A substantial and detailed picture evolves of Steinway's life and his social milieu.

The Aeolian American Piano Corporation Collection contains the extant records and design drawings of the world's largest piano manufacturer of the early 20th century. The Aeolian American Piano Corporation was formed in 1932 with the merger of two prominent piano manufacturers, The Aeolian Co. (incorporated 1887) and the American Piano Co. (incorporated 1908). The corporation's offices and factory were located in East Rochester, New York. Each company brought with it subsidiary companies. Foremost among them were Chickering & Sons, Mason & Hamlin, J. and C. Fischer, Foster-Armstrong Co., and the Wm. Knabe Co. By the 1960s, the firm employed almost 500 emplyees in East Rochester. Portions of the corporate records of these seven companies and the records of the merged corporation form this collection. Materials include: 300 trade catalogs and advertising pieces; 25 ledgers and daybooks; 50 blueprints for pianos; 10 volumes of piano patents; 90 photographs; 20 master rolls for making player piano rolls; 15 folders of papers and correspondence; 35 monographs; and 25 newspaper issues.
