The Panama collection.

Title: The Panama collection. 1855-1856.

The letters in the collection are addressed to Captain Theodorus Bailey, commander of the United States ship "St. Mary's". In December 1855, Bailey received orders to cruise between Valparaiso, Chile, and San Juan del Sud, Nicaragua "for the protection of citizens and their commerce". In April 1856, violence occurred between native Panamanians and American travelers using the trans-Isthmian route. The Panamanians had sacked property owned by American citizens in the city. Tension was high in the city and this is reflected in six of the letters in the collection. There is also a letter to J. Hawes from Cornelius Vanderbilt, who was trying to establish an alternative route through Nicaragua to compete with the Panama route. The other letters deal with Navy business.

Title: Papers, 1835-1888.

Letters on legal matters in Suffolk County, with a few on personal and family matters. Most are letters to Judge Smith concerning deeds and mortgages, guardianships, property disputes, claims of money owed, the Long Island Rail Road, and changes of trial dates. Civil War era letters concern compensation for widows and Smith's work as a commissioner of the draft on Long Island. Also, letters from Admiral Theodorus Bailey about Bailey's role in the capture of New Orleans during the war. There is a composition on "Manhood" written when Smith was 59, reflecting on his life; and a letterpress copy of Smith's manuscript on the history of Smithtown, published in Munsell's "History of Suffolk County," 1882. Smith's legal files, the bulk of the collection, contain court calendars, minutes, bonds, wills, mortgages, requests for title searches, an alphabetical file of New York Supreme Court cases, and files on cases involving the Smithtown and Port Jefferson Railroad Company, including deeds, contracts, accounts, letters, and articles of agreement.

The collection consists of more than 1,100 letters, clippings, reprints, and other documents amassed by John Sanford Barnes and others to, from, and about notable persons including many with named series in the Naval History Society Collection (e.g., William Bainbridge, John Barry , French E. Chadwick, Gustavus Conyngham, Gustavus Vasa Fox, Caspar F. Goodrich, Isaac Hull, John Paul Jones, Richard Worsam Meade 3rd, Oliver Hazard Perry, and Henry A. Wise). Highlights of the series include documents signed by Presidents John Quincy Adams and James Madison; others signed by John C. Calhoun, Salmon P. Chase, Richard Henry Dana, David Farragut, Robert Fulton, John Hancock, Rufus King, Seth Low, Robert Morris, and Matthew C. Perry; and a lock of Abraham Lincoln's hair removed after his death and sent by Robert Todd Lincoln to Gustavus Vasa Fox at the latter's request. Among David Porter's letters are cartoons and drawings by him, including one of animal-headed naval officers listening to explanations of the value of steam-powered vessels, which complement others in the Naval History Society's Fox collection. The William Smith folder includes a map of an attack on Whampoa, China, in 1870. It is unclear what Barnes's connection was to Nikola Tesla: letters from him indicate that he had visited Barnes in New York in 1904.

Carey, William M. Davis, John M. Falconer, Charles Lanman, James Lenox, William H. Ludlow, Thomas McElrath, Luman Reed, William Schaus, Francis B. Spinola, Jonathan Sturges, Benjamin Franklin Thompson and Effingham Tuthill. Diaries or journals, 1843-1868, include many sketches. Bound note-books and loose notes include autobiographical notes, lists of commissions and paintings, notes on a variety of subjects such as painting techniques and materials, other painters, health and medications, carriage painting, boat design, improvements to the harbor at St. James, N.Y., politics, spiritualism and religion. There are also social invitations, calling cards, notices of exhibits and other announcements of the National Academy of Design, books and catalogs from Mount's library, an adminiustrator's account for Mount's estate, ms. music written or copied by Mount, and patterns, varnish recipes, memoranda, notes, a U.S. patent and other papers concerning Mount's invention of a hollow-backed violin called the "Cradle of Harmony."

Jouett's 13 Aug. 1861 letter written from the frigate Santee to Captain Theodorus Bailey asks for a shore station and notes that he has not had a shore station in 17 years and only 13 months off duty; his 20 Feb. 1862 letter to William W. McKean, commander, Gulf Blockade Squadron, states his desire to command a gunboat; and a 5 Feb. 1893 letter to an unidentified friend notes that he was pleased by his retirement bill as passed by Congress, and notes that he was the only officer who ever captured a vessel of war and was not promoted a grade and given the thanks of Congress.
