Letters on legal matters in Suffolk County, with a few on personal and family matters. Most are letters to Judge Smith concerning deeds and mortgages, guardianships, property disputes, claims of money owed, the Long Island Rail Road, and changes of trial dates. Civil War era letters concern compensation for widows and Smith's work as a commissioner of the draft on Long Island. Also, letters from Admiral Theodorus Bailey about Bailey's role in the capture of New Orleans during the war. There is a composition on "Manhood" written when Smith was 59, reflecting on his life; and a letterpress copy of Smith's manuscript on the history of Smithtown, published in Munsell's "History of Suffolk County," 1882. Smith's legal files, the bulk of the collection, contain court calendars, minutes, bonds, wills, mortgages, requests for title searches, an alphabetical file of New York Supreme Court cases, and files on cases involving the Smithtown and Port Jefferson Railroad Company, including deeds, contracts, accounts, letters, and articles of agreement.
