Title: William A. Collins papers, 1862-1865.

Chiefly letters that William A. Collins sent to his family in Statesville, Iredell County, N.C. Collins's letters discuss camp life; the Regiment's first combat action against Union gun boats at City Point on the James River near Petersburg, Va., 16 June 1862; and actions in northern Virginia and Maryland in the course of which he was wounded and captured at the Battle of Antietam on 17 September 1862. After being paroled, Collins was confined to Chimborazo Hospital No. 4 in Richmond, Va., where he died. There are also a few messages from others, including the unit's captain, and later materials, among them a poem that appears to have been written by Collins's sister in 1865.

Many letters from the period 1895-1899 were written during European travels and describe accommodations, prices, health, acquaintances, and American expatriates in Germany, Italy, and Switzerland.

Ledger of George W. Pettit records the weather and daily temperatures from January 1853-October 1864. The volume also contains scattered very brief remarks on events in his personal life including planting of crops, purchase of slaves, travels, formation of an artillery company in 1861, the enlistment of [sons?] Henry J. and Samuel R. Pettit in the Fluvanna Artillery (known as the Sons of Fluvanna), slave hiring and corn sales to the Confederacy, Federal raid on Columbia, hunting deserters, and death of S. R. Wood in Chimborazo Hospital. Front of volume also contains a few tobacco shipping accounts, 1842-1843.

"Jean" writes to her brother at Ward J. 2nd Division, Chimborazo Hospital, Richmond, noting that she is glad he is improving and sending local Charlottesville, Va., news about friends and family. She mentions her poor health, that all men from 17 to 50 had to report at Charlottesville and that men above 50 were reporting at Palmyra. She reports on the deaths of young Powel Thomas and of "little black John"; the heads of the Sabbath school; learning to weave; and a rumor that William Black, John Haden and James Harlow were taken prisoners and Mr. Whitehurst killed "throwing up fortifications at the Bridge near Charlottesville." She advises her brother to point dying and wounded soldiers to the Lamb of God.

Ferguson, to keep an ordinary at his hotel in Liberty, Bedford County, Va. Also an account of the estate of William Thompson of Carroll County, Va., 1864 April, by his executor William Kyle; an attested statement that Nelson B.
