Photographer; Norwood, Mass.
Day began photography in the late 1880s. By 1895 he had established a reputation as a pictorial photographer, and was elected to the Brotherhood of the Linked Ring. In 1900 he arranged in London the first major exhibition of pictorial photography in Europe. A fire in his Boston studio destroyed over 2,000 glass negatives in 1904, which ended his photography career. Day was also a collector of Keatsiana. He published fine books of poetry and other literary works at his firm of Copeland and Day from 1893-1899.

Charles Eliot Norton papers
Title:
Charles Eliot Norton papers
This archive contains letters addressed to Charles Eliot Norton from about 1845 to1908. Norton was a Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846) and professor of the History of Fine Arts at Harvard from 1874 to 1898, with a special interest in the study and translation of Dante. Many of the letters in this collection deal with art and with Dante. In addition he knew a great many prominent figures in both England and the United States, especially those in the political field and the literary and artistics fields. His correspondence with these people often touches upon their public and their private lives. From 1863 to 1868 Norton was joint editor with his friend James Russell Lowell of the North American review. The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review). In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. A list of some of the letters Norton received commenting on this controversy is at the end of this index. Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.

Title:
Alfred Stieglitz / Georgia O'Keeffe archive 1728-1986
The Alfred Stieglitz/Georgia O'Keeffe Archive contains correspondence files, manuscripts, documentary ephemera, photographs, art and realia related to the lives and careers of Alfred Stieglitz and Georgia O'Keeffe, his second wife, and to other members of Stieglitz's family. The first subgroup, Alfred Stieglitz Papers, consists of material documenting Stieglitz's life's work: correspondence with artists, photographers, and writers; manuscripts by Stieglitz and others describing the art movements of the early twentieth century; scrapbooks; an autograph collection; prints of photographs by Stieglitz and other noted photographers; awards given to Stieglitz for his work; several works of art such as four poster portraits by Charles Demuth; and notebooks assembled posthumously to record the contents of Stieglitz's extensive art collection before it was dispersed following his death. The second subgroup, Georgia O'Keeffe Papers, consists primarily of correspondence from O'Keeffe's friends and family along with a number of fan letters, subject files, and business correspondence addressing rights and reproductions of O'Keeffe's works. This subgroup also includes files of documentary ephemera and a number of awards and medals given to O'Keeffe. The third subgroup, Stieglitz Family Papers, consists of correspondence, documentary ephemera, and drawings from Stieglitz family members, principally Alfred's parents, Edward and Hedwig.

Murray, Charles Fairfax, 1849-1919. [Letter, 1894] Nov. 3, 17 Shaftsbury Road, Hammersmith, W. [to] Mr. Day / C. Fairfax Murray.
Title:
[Letter, 1894] Nov. 3, 17 Shaftsbury Road, Hammersmith, W. [to] Mr. Day / C. Fairfax Murray.
Murray writes to Mr. Day (most probably F. Holland Day) indicating that he has forwarded Day's letter of Oct. 13th to William Ward of Richmond, in regards to a copy of The Germ (1850). He then tells Day a bit about the history of the publication. -- [Letter] 1894 Oct. 30, 2, Church Terrace, Richmond, Surrey [to] P. Holland Day / Wm. Ward. Ward responds to the letter forwarded by Murray and likely misuses a P for an F for the first initial of Day's name, indicating that he has a copy of The Germ for sale: "The 9 guinea copy is well bound in morocco ..." -- Also a Feb.-Mar. 1969 issue (in part) of: The month at Goodspeed's, a brief article on the early issues of The Germ.
