Trusler, John, 1735-1820. Memoirs, part 2, circa 1810.
Title:
Memoirs, part 2, circa 1810.
Manuscript, in a single hand, of the second part of Trusler's diary. The author begins by considering the art of memoir-writing and reflecting on the public reception of the first part of his Memoirs; the rest of the volume covers a wide variety of professional, personal, social, philosophical, and anecdotal subjects. In addition to his own successes as a preacher and author and analyses of the status of these professions, he discusses issues of real estate and financial planning; warns his readers against entering into debt; explains the financial relationship between the bookselling trade and writers; and complains about the evils of the printing trade and of low-priced books. Elsewhere, he discusses his ideas about education; whether thieves possess honor; the disgraceful state of medical practice; and criticizes prevailing fashions of women's dress, comparing them unfavorably to the modesty of Quakers. He also mentions current events and a wide variety of notable personages, including the arrival in 1762 of three Cherokee chiefs to England, where they were displayed in a "raised Covered Theatre" and exhibited, with their wives, to the public, reflecting on their appearance and moral beliefs of the "savages." Other names he mentions include Henry Fielding, Benjamin Franklin, Christopher Columbus, William Hogarth, Horace Walpole, and Robert Walpole. The volume also contains personal anecdotes of his two wives and children and the experience of his second wife in childbed. The manuscript is accompanied by a typed transcription.

This section is followed by extracts from numerous sources related to the Spectator, Tatler, and Guardian; and includes copies of letters of such writers as Swift, Pope, Richard Steele, Thomas Percy; and Addison. The next section contains extracts from Lawrence's Life of Fielding relating to periodical works conducted by Henry Fielding, followed by a history of coffee and coffee-houses in London, which includes biographies of numerous individual London coffeehouses. One letter contains two pencil drawings, an engraving, and a paper cutout of a silhouette (L.g.211). Letters are full of references to theatre and literature, discussing Shakespeare, Mrs. Radcliffe, Madame de Staël, La Fontaine, Fielding, Hannah More, Fanny Burney, Kant, Edgeworth, Victor Hugo, Sir Walter Scott (e.g., L.g.233, 234, 236, 246-49, 251). She reacts to her aunt's will in L.g.243, and to a kaleidoscope in L.g.238. Title:
Newspaper cuttings, circa 1770.
Manuscript of a collection of about a thousand newspaper clippings, primarily from the Middlesex Journal, but also from other periodicals such as St James's Chronicle and the Theatrical Intelligence. Many of the clippings are lighthearted or satirical, including poems, anecdotes about society notables, epigrams, and epitaphs. These include poems on women's behavior and a poetic epistle from Henry Fielding to Sir Robert Walpole. Other items include news and summaries of new plays and reviews of the theatrical performers; and numerous pieces on America, including a dialogue between a Virginian and a New-Hampshire man and a piece titled On the present American system. The collection also contains reports of petty robberies, accidents, swindlers, and public disorder. Some names have been filled in where the newspaper left them blank, including one anecdote on the late Duke of Bedford; occasionally names have been underlined, or dates handwritten on the clippings. The clippings have been pasted over pages of an account book with at least one date of 1725.

Tom Jones [collection] : a comic opera in three acts founded upon Fielding's novel / by Alex. M. Thompson and Robert Courtneidge ; lyrics by Chas. H. Taylor ; music by Edward German. 1907.
Arranged in two groups: I. Vocal scores (5). II. Orchestra parts (14). Copy 1 of the vocal scores (all published by Chappell, London, 1907) is identified on the cover as the conductor's score and is heavily annotated. It also contains interpolated numbers in manuscript form, most notably the song "The Road to Yesterday" by Clare Kummer, arranged by Frank Saddler. Words for the song are lacking. Orchestra parts for this song also appear for oboe and cornet. All music for these two instruments is in manuscript form on Tams-Witmark paper. All other parts are published by Chappell, 1907. All vocal scores carry the composer's stamp. A list of the Apollo Theatre (London) cast will be found in the preliminary pages. Copies 1 and 2 of the vocal scores represent the Apollo Theatre performance, according to handwritten notes opposite the title pages.
