The collection includes a small amount of personal and biographical materials, as well as his correspondence and lectures. The collection has been arranged into five series: Correspondence, Lectures, Miscellaneous, Public Health Information Columns, and Writings. The Correspondence Series, 1926-1977, .75 cubic feet, includes Dr. Waring's correspondence on topics such as the publication of his books, research on medical history, and the South Carolina Tricentennial. Correspondents include Dr. Neill W. Macaulay, Dr. R.M. Pollitzer, and Dr. Richard H. Shryock. The series is arranged alphabetically by subject and the last name of the correspondent. The Lecture Series, 1970-1974, .25 cubic feet, includes Dr. Waring's lectures, notes, and index cards used for his lectures. Lecture topics include caricatures and medical history in South Carolina. The series is arranged alphabetically. The Miscellaneous Series, 1928-1977, .75 cubic feet, includes biographical materials on Dr. Waring, honors, awards, and certificates, news clippings, Charleston County Medical Society meeting minutes, committee and membership lists, and lists of items from the Waring Historical Library displayed at the Greenville, S.C. Health and Science Fair. The series also contains photographs and negatives of the Waring Historical Library and Dr. Waring and two scrapbooks compiled by Dr. Waring. A journal in the series has lists of books. The file on the Waring family has a newspaper article that mentions a portrait of George Washington Waring and his wife. The series is arranged alphabetically. The Public Health Information Column Series, 1964-1973, .75 cubic feet, contains typescripts and news clippings of articles on various public health matters. These articles were written by members of the Medical Society of South Carolina's Public Health Information Committee and published in newspapers throughout the state. Dr. Waring served as chair of the committee. Article subjects include arthritis, family planning, drug abuse, obesity, and tuberculosis. The series is arranged alphabetically according to the original file structure. The Writings Series, .50 cubic feet, 1923-1974, includes typescripts of Dr. Waring's writings on historical and medical subjects, book reviews of Dr. Waring's books, book reviews written by Dr. Waring, research notes, and a file of unpublished works by Dr. Waring. The original order of the collection has been preserved as much as possible, and the collection is arranged into three series: Correspondence, Personal, and Professional. The collection is arranged alphabetically. The Correspondence Series, .4 cubic feet, 1917-1964, contains both personal and professional correspondence of Dr. Mustard. Subjects discussed in the letters include the attempt to consolidate the U.S. Public Health Service with the U.S. Army, publishing Dr. Mustard's book, An Introduction to Public Health, and congratulations on Dr. Mustard's professional accomplishments. Correspondents include Dr. Joseph Waring, Dr. William Atmar Smith, Dr. E.L. Stebbins, and Surgeon General Rupert Blue. The Personal Series, .10 cubic feet, 1915-1940, contains photographs, news clippings, medical licenses, correspondence relating to Dr. Mustard's role as guardian of the estate of T.C. Haile, and a list of the class of 1911 of the Medical College of the State of South Carolina. The Professional Series, 1.5 cubic feet, 1907-1955, contains syllabi and lecture notes from Dr. Mustard's various teaching positions, speeches, reports, and typescripts of Dr. Mustard's publications. Public health data from South Carolina, Virginia, and New York are also included, as well as materials from Dr. Mustard's tenure on the editorial board of the American Public Health Association. The South Carolina Medical Association (SCMA) Records, 1869 to 1977, consist of 22 folders and 2 volumes of records documenting the business and interests of the association. Many of the files seem to be those collected by Dr. Joseph I. Waring, editor of the Journal, Charleston physician, and medical historian. The records include minutes, membership lists, committee files, photographs, meeting programs, and documentation in support of a history of the SCMA written by Dr. Joseph I. Waring. Also included are materials about the Journal of the South Carolina Medical Association, though these are decidedly incomplete. The notebook, 1942-43, was compiled by Dr. Julian Price and contains documentation of routine association business, as well as documentation pertaining to the Associations activities during and in support of World War II. The two bound volumes are on loan from the SCMA. The first volume contains handwritten entries from the reorganization meeting in 1869, including constitution and bylaws. The rest of the volume contains handwritten minutes and, later, published copies of the proceedings of the association, which were pasted into the ledger. The second volume of records consists almost entirely of pages from the published proceedings, which were pasted into the ledger, however there are marginalia and other handwritten notations.

Cathcart Papers, circa 1917-2005, contains 1.25 cubic feet, consisting of 48 folders of material relating to Cathcart's career as the chief surgeon at Roper Hospital and as professor of surgery at the Medical College of the State of South Carolina, and his involvement in professional organizations. Files are arranged in three series: biography, career, and professional development. The Biography series, circa 1936-2005, contains 4 folders, including pictures, articles and a collection of speeches Dr. Cathcart delivered on the radio from 1936 to 1938. The Career series, circa 1919-1943, contains 28 folders arranged in three subseries: Army, Medical College, and Roper Hospital. The Army subseries, circa 1919-1942, consists of 2 folders, including is a copy of his honorable discharge from the army and correspondence regarding South Carolina physicians who assisted wounded soldiers during World War II. The Medical College subseries, circa 1927-1943, consists of 9 folders. Items pertaining to Dr. Cathcart's position as professor of surgery at the Medical College are separated into annual files (1927-1935 and 1936-1943) which include correspondence, newspaper clippings and the schedules of several post graduate sessions. Following the annual files are subject files, organized alphabetically, which contain information about the Medical College Honor System, the South Carolina legislature regarding the appointment of the Board of Trustees for the Medical College, Dr. Cathcart's letter of resignation from the Medical College, the order and unveiling of commemorative marble tablets, an outline of surgery recitations, and newspaper clippings in reference to his retirement. Roper Hospital subseries, circa 1937-1946, consisting of 17 folders arranged alphabetically by subject. Files contain applications for nursing school and residency, the creation of a blood bank, requisition of bronze plates, development of a cancer clinic and general correspondence. Included is the history of Roper Hospital and samples of hospital forms, bills and booklets and policies. The subseries contains comparisons of laboratory services, several descriptions of patient cases and items referring to public welfare in Charleston County. In particular, substantial items are enclosed that refer to the Roper Hospital physicians' objections to the construction of the Medical College Hospital. The Professional Development series, circa 1904-1949, consists of 16 folders. Dr. Cathcart's membership in professional organizations is organized alphabetically. Files pertaining to the American College of Surgeons include correspondence, programs and files from the Credence Committee, of which he was a member. Also included in this series are correspondence, programs and policies from the International College of Surgeons, the Medical Society of South Carolina, the South Carolina Economic Association and the South Carolina Medical Association.
