The Waring Library Society was founded in 1977 to support the Waring Historical Library as a "friends of the library" group. The first meeting of the Waring Library Society Executive Committee was held on May 17, 1977. By June 1977, the Committee by-laws had been approved by the MUSC Health Sciences Foundation. The goals of the Waring Library Society are to develop the collections of the Waring Historical Library, raise funds for the Library's endowment, promote membership in the Waring Library Society, and perpetuate interest in the history of medicine within the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and the community at large. The Society sponsors lectures, student programming, exhibits and other programs and events designed to promote the history of the health sciences in South Carolina. Membership in the Waring Library society is open to the public.
