This collection consists of incoming correspondence to Thurlow Weed. The correspondence is general in nature, covering both social and political issues. The bulk of the correspondence consists of requests relating to Weed's editorial career, such as personal recommendations, help with social issues, and business agreements from P. Marro, Wiggins, S.H. Wales, Martha Lamb, William Fullerton, Lyman Tremain, Henry Bergh, Charles Sheldon, Pierre Van Wyck, and Clement Laird Vallandingham. There are also three letters from James Grant Wilson, requesting Weed's donation to go towards the erection of a statue dedicated to the poet Fitz-Greene Halleck, The collection also contains letters relating to Weed's political activities from John Townsend, Hamilton Fish, and R.H. Shreve.

Title: Henry Bergh letters, 1866-1884.

Seven autograph letters (one accompanied by envelope), signed, by Henry Burgh, and one portrait engraving autographed by Burgh. All letters are written on A.S.P.C.A. stationary and most concern the A.S.P.C.A. or cases of animal cruelty. They are addressed to Orange County, N.Y. justice of the peace John Burt; New York state senator Augustus R. Elwood; the editor of the New York Tribune; actor Lester Wallack; and writer Henry Sedley. Bergh at times expresses dismay and frustration with the progress of his causes, in particular decrying the New York City Board of Aldermen and Assemblyman Denis Burns. Of particular interest are two letters: the first, dated December 11, 1866, protesting the regular feeding of live animals to a snake at Barnum's museum; and the second, dated November 7, 1881, requesting that Wallack find a position for "a beautiful young lady, of my acquaintance, who has already had much experience in playing elsewhere" at his new theater, which opened in 1882.

Francis Ellingwood Abbot (1836-1903), was a Unitarian minister and a radical religious philosopher. Abbot founded the Free Religious Association (1867), was editor of the weekly publication (1870-1880), and organizer and President of the National Liberal League. He earned an A.B. at Harvard University in 1855 and a Ph.D and A.M. in 1881. Abbot taught philosophy briefly at Harvard University in 1887. The Index

Autographs, correspondence, portraits, and envelopes. Most of the materials were donated by Fred Rosenstock to Brigham Young University, but some were acquired from different sources. Many of the items were originally gathered by Barton Orville Aylesworth, a biographer and an autograph collector in Fort Collins, Colorado. Contains autographs, correspondence, portraits, and envelopes. The materials are largely letters and autographs produced by prominent American and British authors, editors, politicians, and other important artistic and historical figures in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The items relating to the individual creators are being cataloged separately and will be available on the Brigham Young University cataloging data base. BYU special collections created this artificial collection placing the material in alphabetical order.
