An interview with Arthur Jackson (1911-1977), commonly known as Peg Leg Sam, African American blues harmonica player and medicine show performer, from Jonesville, S.C., about his experiences in show business, medicine shows, radio broadcasting, and riding freight trains; and a recording of Henry Johnson, African American blues performer, who plays guitar, harmonica, and piano, from Union, S.C., playing and singing the blues. Both Jackson's and Johnson's musical careers ranged from the mid-1930s to the mid-1970s.

The collection includes materials documenting the making of Tom Davenport's films "It Ain't City Music," about country music; "Born for Hard Luck," about Arthur Jackson (also known as Peg Leg Sam), a harmonica player, singer, and comedian who performed in medicine shows; "The Shakers," about the Sabbathday Lake Shaker community, New Gloucester, Me., and the Canterbury Shaker community, Canterbury, N.H.; "Being a Joines: A Life in the Brushy Mountains," about the Joines family of North Carolina; "A Singing Stream: A Black Family Chronicle," which documents the Landis Family of Creedmore, N.C., and other local gospel singing groups; the series "From the Brothers Grimm," retellings of classic Brothers Grimm fairy tales set in Delaplane, Va.; "The Ballad of Frankie Silver," which tells the story of Frances Silver, who was hanged for the murder of her husband Charles Silver; "Remembering the High Lonesome," about John Cohen, a filmmaker and photographer, and his work in rural Kentucky in the 1950s; "When My Work Is Over," which tells the story of African American storyteller Louise Anderson; and the recording of a concert performed by the New Lost City Ramblers string band in February of 2000. Included are grant applications, transcripts, field notes, correspondence, financial material, study guides, production related notes, and publicity related to each of these films. There are also audiotapes and audio cassettes that contain interviews and other sound used for these films; moving image materials used in the creating of these films; materials relating to other film projects directed by Tom Davenport; printed materials relating to Davenport; posters advertising Davenport's films; and other items.

Recordings of concerts and workshops in dance, banjo, cajun music, and fiddle, as well as an interview with one of the performers. Included are cajun music from Louisiana; old-time country music from Lexington, Va.; blues from Union County, S.C.; blues piano from Alabama; blues guitar from Bowling Green, Va.; old-time country guitar music from Madison County, N.C.; traditional music from Orange County, N.C.; old-time country music from West Virginia and Virginia; ballads, Irish music, shape note singing, tale telling; and other performances. Among the performers are Tommy Jarrell, Dewey Balfa, Mike Seeger, Howard Armstrong, Peg Leg Sam (Arthur Jackson, 1911-1977), Big Chief Ellis, John Cephas, Fred Cockerham, the Red Clay Ramblers, Hazel Dickens, and Alice Gerrard. The 1976 Winter Folk Festival was a folk music festival held 20-24 January in Chapel Hill, N.C. The festival featured concerts, workshops, films, and jam sessions of folk music of the southern United States, including old-time, blues, Cajun, and string band music. Cecelia "Cece" Conway and Jan Schochet, white graduate folklore students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, conceived of the festival, which was sponsored by UNC's Carolina Union and hosted at various venues across campus as well as the larger Chapel Hill and Carrboro community. According to the Daily Tar Hell, the festival schedule was as follows: Thursday, January 22, 1976: 12pm: Gallery display of traditional folk items in the Union's South Lounge; 1 and 3pm: Films, Spent it All and This World is Not My Home, in the Great Hall; 7:30pm: "Folksongs in Transition", a discussion and mini-concert led by Mike Seeger in the Great Hall. Friday, January 23, 1976: 11:30am: Informal music on the indoor Union balcony; 12:15pm: Cajun workshop led by Tommy Thompson in the Union South Lounge; 1pm: Banjo Workshop: "Black White Interchange" led by Tommy Thompson on the Union balcony; 2:30pm: dance workshop: Clogging and Country Dance in the Great Hall; 7:30pm: Concert with Mike Seeger and Alice Gerrard, Tommy Jarrell, Big Chief Ellis and John Sephus, Red Clay Ramblers, Apple Chill Cloggers and the Balfa Brothers; 10pm: Festival party and informal jamming. Saturday, January 24, 1976: 1pm: Fiddle workshop "Introduction to Various Fiddle Styles" and "Rural Folk and Urban Apprentices" on the Union balcony; 2:30pm: Singing workshop led by Hazel [Dickens] and Alice [Gerrard] in the Union Music Gallery; 3pm: Blues workshop in the Union South Lounge; 3:30pm: Mini-fiddlers convention in the Great Hall; 7:30pm: Concert with Roberts & Barrand, peg Leg Sam, Alice and Hazel, Mike Seeger, Mt. Airy musicians, Balfa Brothers, Red Clay Ramblers, Green Grass Cloggers, Martin, Bogan and the Armstrongs. Sunday, January 25, 1976: 6:30 and 9pm: Films, Spent it All, This World is Not My Home, and premiere of Musical Holdouts by John Cohen in Great Hall.

Recordings from the four film projects undertaken by independent filmmaker Tom Davenport with the UNC-CH Curriculum in Folklore. These recordings were made during the shooting of, and provide the sound tracks for, the following films: "Peg Leg Sam," about Arthur Jackson (1911-1977), an African-American musician, tale teller, and medicine show performer; "The Shakers, " exploring the remaining Shaker communities in New Hampshire and Maine; "Being a Joines, " about the life of John Joines, a storyteller from Wilkes County, N.C.; and "A Singing Stream, " which documents a gospel music singing family from Creedmoor, N.C. including the gospel group The Golden Echoes. The collection includes both extensive interviews and oral histories as well as musical and narrative performances.

Gospel music is performed by the Gospel Jubilators and Golden Echoes, both African-American gospel groups. Old- time string band music is performed by the Byard Ray String Band and Ernest East and the Pine Ridge Boys. Old-time country songs and tunes are performed by Kilby Snow (1905- ), Anglo-American autoharpist; the Blue Sky Boys, Anglo-American old-time country duo; Tommy Jarrell (1901-1985), Anglo-American fiddler; Fred Cockerham (1901- ), Anglo-American banjo player. Bluegrass music is performed by the Bluegrass Experience.
