Recordings of musical performances and workshops from the second North Carolina Folklife Festival, directed by George Holt and sponsored by the North Carolina Folklife Institute and the Duke University Union, which was held 18-19 April 1975. Included are performances by Snuffy Jenkins (1908- ), Anglo-American old-time musician known for his three-finger banjo picking style; Pappy Sherrill (1925- ), Anglo-American old-time fiddler who played with the Blue Sky Boys and later with Snuffy Jenkins in the WIF Hillbillies string band and the Hired Hands; Carroll Best, Anglo-American string band musician; Mac Snodderly, Anglo-American traditional fiddler from western N.C.; the Gospel Jubilators, African-American a capella gospel quartet from Durham, N.C.; Cas Wallin, Anglo-American traditional ballad singer from Madison Co., N.C.; Peg Leg Sam (Arthur Jackson, 1911-1977), African-American folk musician, harmonica player, and Southern medicine show performer. Also included are performances by E.C. Ball (1913-1978) and Orna Ball (1907- ), husband and wife Anglo-American gospel performers from Grayson County, Va.; Leonard Emanuel, Anglo-American hollerer; Harvey Ellington, Anglo-American old-time musician; Fred Cockerham (1901- ), Anglo-American fiddler and banjo player; Golden Echoes, African-American gospel group from Creedmoor, N.C.; Blue Sky Boys, Anglo-American old-time duo of Bill and Earl Bolick; Virgil Craven (1902-1980), Anglo-American old- time string band musician of Cedar Falls, N.C.; Bayard Ray, Anglo-American traditional fiddler of Madison County, N.C.; Dellie Norton, Anglo-American ballad singer from western North Carolina; Ola Belle and Bud Reed, Anglo- American early country musicians; and Hazel Dickens, Anglo-American contemporary folksinger and songwriter.

Musician Ola Belle Reed was born in Grassy Creek, N.C. As a teenager, she performed with an early version of the North Carolina Ridge Runners. In 1949, she married Bud Reed. They formed the New River Gang, with Alex Campbell, and operated New River Ranch, a popular country music park near Rising Sun, Md. In the early 1960s, they moved to Sunset Park, Md., and broadcast a weekly show from their store in Oxford, Pa. During the 1970s, Ola Belle Reed and family performed at many folk festivals. ...
