Recordings of performances of blues, gospel, old-time string band music, country songs and tunes, and bluegrass music. Blues music is performed by Willy Trice (1910-1976), African-American blues musician of Durham, N.C.; Elizabeth Cotten (1893-1987), African-American guitarist, singer, and songwriter; Peg Leg Sam (Arthur Jackson, 1911-1977), African- American harmonica player. Gospel music is performed by the Gospel Jubilators and Golden Echoes, both African-American gospel groups. Old- time string band music is performed by the Byard Ray String Band and Ernest East and the Pine Ridge Boys. Old-time country songs and tunes are performed by Kilby Snow (1905- ), Anglo-American autoharpist; the Blue Sky Boys, Anglo-American old-time country duo; Tommy Jarrell (1901-1985), Anglo-American fiddler; Fred Cockerham (1901- ), Anglo-American banjo player. Bluegrass music is performed by the Bluegrass Experience. Tapes also include a fiddle workshop with Bill Hicks and Byard Ray; a clogging workshop with the Clicking Cloggers, with music by Ernest East and the Pine Ridge Boys; a blues workshop with Elizabeth Cotten, a children's workshop with David Holt, Marcie Kramish, and Betty Smith; and an introduction to the festival by festival coordinator George Holt and Alan Jabbour, Director of the Office of Folklife Programs, Library of Congress.

Elizabeth Brownrigg (Henderson) Cotten (1875-1975) worked in the Southern Historical Collection and was secretary of the Friends of the Library of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
