The letters of Sally Prreston Campbell McDowell thomas Miller and the Reverend John Miller form the largest part of the collection. These courtship letters discuss the reluctance of Mrs. McDowell, a divorcée, to marry Miller, and are largely filled with her religious doubts and ethical questions as to the propriety and morality of their marriage. The collection also contains an outline for "The two virtues" by Miller. Civil War notes and 1889 unfinished memoirs of Charles Scott Venable, aide de camp to Robert E. Lee from the outbreak of the War through Anitetam, contain many anecdotes of the war. Venable's narrative is supplemented by Francis P. Venable's 1917 memoir of his mother, Margaret Cantey McDowell Venable, which include many of his father's war letters as well as an account of the family at the University of Georgia and the University of Virginia. The collection also contains transcripts of letters from Eliza Jaquelin Ambler Brent Carrington to Ann Ambler Fisher giving her thoughts on education and rrecalling life during the Revolution and her earliest memories of her brother-in-law John Marshall. A series of Baltimore city and county deeds, surveyors reports and land conveyances, 1700-1869, many of the Warner family, complete the collection.

The university's earliest , adopted by its Board of Trustees in 1795, defined the duties and rights of the faculty. Formal faculty meetings have been held since at least 1799; the amended adopted by the trustees in December 1799 included guidelines for the conduct of such meetings. Throughout the antebellum period, the faculty was responsible for enforcing social as well as academic regulations and for handling cases of student misconduct. After 1875 the faculty assumed an increasing role in establishing policies governing educational activities and the awarding of degrees by the university. The , originally titled , was adopted by the General Faculty in 1947 and has been amended numerous times. In 1950 the General Faculty authorized the creation of the Faculty Council to act as its legislative body. The council, composed of elected members from the various faculty divisions and ex-officio members from the university administration, held its first meeting on 5 January 1951. Officers of the faculty include the chair and the secretary. The university's chancellor presides over meetings of the Faculty Council. Much of the Faculty Council's work is carried on by its standing and special committees. Laws and Regulations Laws of the University Faculty Code of University Government Faculty Legislation Records include minutes of meetings of the General Faculty, 1799-2011, and of the Faculty Council, 1951-2011; files of the secretary of the faculty and of the chair of the faculty; minutes of the meetings of various faculty divisions; and files of standing and special committees. Beginning in the mid-1990s, there are scattered meeting transcripts among the minutes. There are also recordings of many General Faculty and Faculty Council meetings, 1984-2010, on 283 audiocassettes, 31 data compact discs, and three digital video discs.

Francis Preston Venable, son of CharlesScott Venable, aid-de-camp to General Robert E. Lee, 1862-1865, and professor ofmathematics, University of Virginia, 1865-1896, was born 17 November 1856 inFarmville, Virginia. In 1893 Venable identified calcium carbide, thereby laying thefoundation for the success of the Union Carbide Corporation--but was neverfinancially rewarded for this discoverry. From 1900-1914 he served as president ofthe University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1930 Venable retired fromteaching and four years later on 17 March 1934, Venable died. The collection includes correspondence, writings,pictures, and other material of Francis Preston Venable, professor of chemistry atthe University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 1880-1930, and president of theUniversity, 1900-1914. Professional writings and personal correspondence of membersof the Venable family constitute the bulk of these papers.

The records contain the official correspondence of Arthur Twining Hadley during his tenure as president of Yale University. The papers document the rapid change and expansion which occurred at Yale during Hadley's presidency. The incoming correspondence contains letters with members of the Yale faculty and administration; requests for personal appearances and speeches and articles; inquiries from educational administrators; and correspondence with alumni relating to fund-raising and class reunions. The outgoing correspondence, in letterbook form, consists of carbon copies of Hadley's official outgoing correspondence from 1899 to 1921. Also included are subject files relating to ROTC and other military training programs; acceptances and regrets to invitations to Hadley's inauguration; newspaper clippings relating to Hadley's activities; copies of three addresses by Hadley; a notebook kept by one of Hadley's students in Economics 20 (1894-1895); Hadley's office appointment books (1900-1920); and two photograph albums.
