Title: Matthew P. Deady papers, 1850-1923.

The collection consists primarily of letters written to Deady from friends and political correspondents, including many of Oregon's leading state and national politicians. Influential forces such as Jesse Applegate and Asahel Bush are voluminously represented as are U.S. senators Joseph Lane, James W. Nesmith, Henry W. Corbett, George Williams and La Fayette Grover. Complementing these is a small set of letters written by Deady to several of the same persons. Deady's personal journal, comprising several volumes, recorded his thoughts and activities during the last twenty-five years of his life. Also included are receipts, cards and invitations amassed over several years and texts of commencement speeches Deady gave in the 1870s and 1880s. Completing the Deady papers are several documents generated and added after Matthew's death by his wife, Lucy Ann Deady, including her autobiographical narrative describing her family's trek from Missouri to Oregon in 1846.

Collection consists of papers, including an account book, 1859-1861, and 32 letters, 1872-1900. The correspondence includes an exchange of 6 letters with U.S. Senator Joseph Dolph in 1884 concerning the future of the Indian training school at Forest Grove. From 1890-1894 there are letters to and from Myron Eells, John A. Hamilton, C.E. Clapp, H.A. Shorey, Napoleon Davis, and Thomas Condon about proposed changes in the charter of Pacific University, and personnel problems at the school. An account book, 1859-1861, contains miscellaneous accounts receivable, and records of apples shipped on various vessels.
