Correspondence, financial papers, legal papers, writings and speeches, scrapbooks, pictures, and miscellaneous material reflecting the philanthropic, cultural and social activities of the Semans family. A major focus is the interrelationship of the Semans family with the Biddle, Duke, and Trent families. Additionally, the papers document the roles of Mary Duke Biddle, James H. Semans and Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans have taken in the development of arts and educational programs throughout North Carolina. To a lesser degree, the papers reflect on childcare during the early 20th century. Collection (124000 items, 109 lin. ft.; dated 1928-1987, bulk 1960-1985) comprises correspondence, printed material, mimeographed material, clippings, press releases, newsletters, reports, financial records, minutes and agenda of meetings, contracts, pictures and slides, questionnaries, and telephone logs, chiefly 1960-1985. A principal focus is the arts involvement of Hanes in North Carolina as well as nationally. Arts organizations represented in the collection include the Associated Councils of the Arts, Awards in the Visual Arts, the Jargon Society, the National Endowment for the Arts, the North Carolina School of the Arts, the North Carolina Arts Council, the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, and the Arts Council. Another focal point is Ampersand, Inc., a Winston-Salem consulting firm Hanes established. It provided fund raising, management, public relations, and publicity services for non-profit organizations, especially arts groups. Included to a lesser extent is information about Hanes' concern for conservation. Individuals represented in the files include Edward B. Benjamin, Ralph Burgard, Agnes De Mille, Nancy Hanks, Helen Hayes, James B. Hunt, George M. Irwin, Daniel Killian Moore, Alvin H. Reiss, Terry Sanford, James H. Semans, Roger L. Materials reflect especially Hanes' interest in the arts, conservation (particularly in western North Carolina and Virginia), and the city of Winston-Salem. Addition (2010-0201) (2250 items; 3.0 lin. ft.; dated 1940-2010) includes correspondence, both incoming and outgoing, as well as appointment books, clippings, and miscellaneous materials relating to Hanes' philanthropy and community involvement in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Prominent topics include the Hanes farm and other conservation and agricultural enterprises; his role in various arts councils and arts movements throughout the city and country, including the National Endowment for the Arts; his interactions with Wake Forest University and other academic institutions; his communications with Wachovia Bank; and other issues or movements that he supported. The majority of the materials are loosely arranged in a chronological file, dating from 1940-2010 (bulk dating from 1991-2009).

Collection consists chiefly of personal and professional correspondence, church records, manuscripts and a thesis, curriculum vita of Clyde and his wife Mary Kestler Clyde, reprints of published articles, book revisions, other printed materials, newsclippings, and photographs. Much of the professional correspondence concerns Clyde's work with the Duke Endowment, first as secretary to the Committee on Educational Institutions, and later as educational consultant to the Trustees of the Endowment. Correspondents include Mary and James H. Semans, and administrators at Davidson College, Furman University, and the University of Florida. Also included is an album of photographs, clippings, invitations, and addresses compiled for the celebration of the Duke Endowment's fortieth anniversary. Among the photographs is one of Mr. Thomas Perkins, a former chairman of the board of trustees of the Duke Endowment. Some of the personal correspondence relates to the death of Mrs. Clyde. The church records from the Independent Unitarian Church in Belleair Bluffs, Fl, include minutes and an address by Clyde on the major religions of China. A transcript of Dr. Clyde's oral history tape regarding his tenure with Duke University, as well as his tenure as director of the Educational Division of the Duke Endowment is included. There is also a description by Mrs. Clyde relating to the launching and operating of the administrative areas of the Woman's College (Duke University) in which she worked; information about her service as president of the Woman's College Alumnae Association, (1966-67); and the initiation that year of the idea of a Continuing Education Program at Duke.
