Oaths of entry, returns of merchandise carried into New York, certificates of importers, returns of cargo, consignee's statements, master's oaths, manifests, powers of attorney authorizing various persons or firms to pick up merchandise at customs, statements of goods remaining in bonded warehouse, a fire insurance policy, a legal brief, and papers and correspondence of New York customs officials including bills from official weighers and inspectors, shipping forms, recommendations for employment; correspondence of Jesse Hoyt, Edward Curtis, Greene Bronson, and others.

The first series, 1792-1894, represents the bulk of the papers and consist of letters, certificates of registration for crews and vessels, returns of manifests, documents regarding imports and exports, petitions for various positions and contracts. The second series, 1833-1840, consists of vouchers and receipts that were generated from the construction of a custom house under Commissioners Samuel Swartwout, Walter Bourne and Elisha Tibbits. Positions in the custom houses were sought for their political and social influence. Within this collection, individuals who had an interest or were involved in the New York Custom House for the period 1794-1894 include Chester Alan Arthur, who was appointed in 1871 as a collector of the Port of New York by President Grant; Greene Carrier Bronson, appointed as collector for the years 1853-1854; Governors Washington Hunt and Horatio Seymour; and Tench Coxe, Samuel Swartwout, Fernando Wood, and James Madison.

John A. Dix Collection, 1831-1879

Title: John A. Dix Collection 1831-1879

Papers of the Army officer; U.S. Senator (1845-1849); U.S. Secretary of the Treasury. During the Civil War, President Lincoln commissioned Dix a major-general, and ordered him to take charge of the Alexandria and Arlington Department, then reassigned him to the Department of Maryland. Dix later served as commander of the Department of the East. After the Civil War, Dix was named Minister to France (1866-1869), and following his return to the U.S., the life-long Democrat became the Republican Party nominee and the successful candidate for the Governorship of New York State (1873-1875). Includes more than 130 items of outgoing correspondence, more than half of which were written to Edwards Pierrepont between 1861 and 1877. Subjects include the Civil War, Reconstruction, New York State and national politics, and French politics and foreign relations preceding the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War.
