Locke was a friend of Edgar Allan Poe and became famous for his controversy with P.T. Barnum over the authenticity of the curios in Barnum's Museum, and for his own 'Moon Hoax', a piece in which he contended that he made a 'Discovery that the Moon Has a Vast Population of Human Beings'. The 'Moon Hoax' was published in 1835. Locke was a descendant of philosopher John Locke.
