Alfred I. du Pont was the eldest son of E. I. du Pont (1829-1877). He joined the family gunpowder firm in 1884, after attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In the 1902 reorganization, he became co-owner and general manager. As a result of a family quarrel, he left the firm in 1916 and eventually built his own banking and real estate empire in Florida. Du Pont was active in Delaware Republican Party politics from 1916 to 1920.

Title:
Records, 1909-1952 (bulk 1914-1948).
The records primarily document the presidency of Lammot du Pont (1926-1940), with some fragmentary records from the Irénée du Pont period (1919-26). The records describe the Du Pont Company's transformation into a diversified chemical company in the years after the First World War. Records document the organization of the Chemical Department under the leadership of Dr. Charles Lee Reese. The collection describes Du Pont's research and development program which during these years focused on dyes, celluloid, cellophane, plastics, ammonia, textile fibers, and artificial rubber. The evolving relationship between corporate strategy, organizational structure, research and development is described. The records also trace the company's post World War I public relations campaign during which it sought to overcome the "Merchant of Death" label. Du Pont's response to the Depression, Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal, and the C.I.O.'s organizing campaigns are also described in these records. There is also much information on company advertising, participation in the New York World's Fair of 1939-1940, and attempts to market Du Pont products or establish plants in foreign countries, particularly Chile, China, Japan, and in Russia both before and after the revolution.

Title:
William du Pont papers, 1863-1945 (bulk 1880-1928).
William du Pont's papers primarily encompass the years of his active business life from the early 1880s to his death in 1928, with a gap in his correspondence and invoices and receipts for the first decade of the 20th century. There are also some early personal correspondence, land purchasing agreements and papers pertaining to companies whose activities started before William du Pont involvement or lasted after his death. Family correspondence includes letters to and from his parents, sisters, daughter Marion and son William, second wife Annie Rogers du Pont and cousin Alfred I. du Pont. They discuss both family and business matters and are contained in Series I. Personal correspondence and Series II. General correspondence. Series I contains also 1892-1900 correspondence between William du Pont and his personal secretary in the United States, C.K. Lennig, which documents activities related to du Pont estate maintenance and businesses during the family's stay in England, including purchase of the "Montpelier" estate. Business-related correspondence of William du Pont collected in Series II. General correspondence reflects his major activities: involvement with powder and dynamite companies; investments in railroads, transportation, utilities and banking enterprises; membership in horse and cattle breeding societies and clubs, horse show organizations and hunting clubs; contacts with horse breeders and dealers; and construction, renovations and repairs at personal properties and business buildings. Materials of companies which William du Pont operated or invested in compose Series IV. Business papers. Papers of the du Pont high explosives enterprise Repauno Chemical Co. contain financial, technical and operational documents, Gunpowder Trade Association agreements and correspondence of the company first presidents Lammot du Pont (1880-1884) and William du Pont (1884-1892.) Another well-documented family business is U.S.F. Powder Company which papers (1919-1945) are probably the most comprehensive source of information on the development and manufacture of flashless powder by du Ponts. Records of the Hinckley Brake Co. and Miller Train Control Corporation, manufacturers of railroad car brake and stop control devices, contain patents for the devices with related correspondence, promotion and reference materials, minute books and bookkeeping records. The collection contains some papers of the Montpelier Supply Company which was organized in 1911 by William du Pont at his estate in Montpelier, Va. to resell general merchandise to the employees and farmers. Papers include minute book, store inventories, monthly farm payrolls and correspondence of William du Pont on financial and operational matters. Papers of William du Pont contain numerous enclosures. They include financial statements of many companies, prospectuses of banks and investment firms, more than 50 issues of informational leaflets of the Horse Association of America (1921-1927) and National Parks Association (1922-1923), catalogs and advertisements for agricultural products and domestic goods, horse and cattle show programs, photographs, blueprints and newspaper clippings. 17 photographs and 66 glass negatives of firing tests from papers of the U.S.F. Powder Co., together with other visual material from the collection have been transferred to the Pictorial Collections Department, Acc. 2007.205.

Papers, 1880-1954.
The personal and business papers document Pierre S. du Pont's business career and political activities. There is a significant body of material describing the history of the Du Pont Company and the General Motors Corporation which trace the transformation of these two firms into modern, centrally administered corporations during the early years of the twentieth century. The evolving relationship between business strategy and corporate structure is documented, as is the role that research and development played in shaping the success of these two companies.

E.I. du Pont de Nemours Powder Company. Records, 1858-1955 (bulk 1903-1926).
Title:
Records, 1858-1955 (bulk 1903-1926).
The administrative papers of the E.I. du Pont de Nemours Powder Company are from the office of president T. Coleman du Pont who presided over the firm from 1903 until 1915. These records document the transformation of the Du Pont Powder Company into a modern centrally administered corporation that would do its own marketing and purchasing and would sell large quantities of all three of the industry's products, black powder, smokeless powder, and dynamite. In order to achieve this goal the company modernized its existing administrative organization. The records describe the establishment of clear-cut functional departments for sales, purchasing, traffic, engineering, personnel and accounting. The records also document all aspects of the powder companies' operations during these years: production, sales, personnel, accounting, and the importation of nitrate from Chile. There is also considerable information on the government's investigations leading to the antitrust suit (including correspondence with company attorneys).

Title:
Acquisitions of Pierre S. du Pont, 1438-1921.
The papers in this collection were acquired by Pierre S. du Pont by purchase or through gift. For some years before his death he was an active collector of Du Pont materials and bought several important bodies of manuscripts from French dealers. These papers are primarily concerned with Du Pont de Nemours, the Physiocrats, the French Revolution, and the antecedents of the Du Ponts and allied families in France. Of particular interest are letters from Jean Baptiste Colbert (1652), Gaspard de Coligny (1554), Jean Jacques Régis de Cambacérès (1795), and Comte Roger de Bussy-Rabutin (1675). Papers of Gabriel Denizot (1818) describe the establishment of the Du Pont Powder Company at Eleutherian Mills. Also included are miscellaneous papers of Eleuthère Irénée du Pont. Papers of Francis Gurney du Pont (1850-1904) contain notebooks on explosions at the gunpowder mills (1815-1902). Papers of Du Pont de Nemours include a copy of his essay on education in the United States entitled "Sur l'éducation nationale dans les Etats-Unis d'Amérique" n.d. This essay was written at the suggestion of Thomas Jefferson during the summer of 1800. It was sent to Jefferson for correction and translation, but this process was never completed.

The letter expresses du Pont's support for women's suffrage and urges Brown, a state senator, to support Delaware's ratification of the 19th Amendment. Du Pont notes that women stand for "what is best in the home and what is best in the home is best for all concerned with a home, as it is about the home our civilization has been constructed."

Title:
Francis Victor du Pont family papers, 1804-1961 [bulk, 1915-1960].
This collection combines papers and memorabilia of Francis Victor du Pont and those of his parents and ancestors. Francis Victor du Pont's own papers focus primarily on his role as an engineer promoting better highways, his roles in Delaware Republican Party affairs including his term as finance chairman. In the former category are papers relating to Coleman du Pont Road, Inc., which his father created to improve the present U.S. Route 13 as a gift to the state the State Highway department, the Bureau of Public Roads, the American Road Builders' Association, and two items on the building and dedication of the Delaware Memorial Bridge. The second are focused on the period 1949-60, particularly the first Eisenhower-Nixon presidential campaign, with items on the reactions to Nixon's famous "Checkers" speech. Personal papers contain information on personal investments, family relationships, diplomas, clippings and biographical notes. Papers of T. Coleman du Pont deal primarily with two events, Coleman's sale of his DuPont Company stock to Pierre S. du Pont through the medium of the Du Pont Securities Company and the extensive litigation brought by other family stockholders to block the sale and divide Coleman's interest proportionately, and his building of the Coleman du Pont Boulevard, later Coleman du Pont Highway. Among the latter is a large presentation book from the people of Delaware containing signatures and speeches commemorating the gift of the highway to the state in 1924. Family miscellany consists of random pieces from other extended du Pont family members dating back to 1804, including letters of Nicholas Van Dyke, Samuel Francis Du Pont, family reminiscences relating to Admiral and Mrs. Samuel Francis Du Pont, Mary Van Dyke du Pont, and others, including a copy of the New York American of October 12, 1824 concerning the visit of Lafayette to Victor du Pont.

Title:
Woodlawn Trustees, Incorporated, records, 1880-2005 (bulk, 1901-1995).
The records of the Woodlawn Trustees, Incorporated, provide an excellent case study of the inherent tension between planned development and the realities of the market for commercial and residential real estate. They also document the outward growth of the Greater Wilmington area over the course of the 20th century and the activities of its Quaker families. The records of the Trustees include charters, minutes, officer lists, directors' correspondence, real estate records, property maps, reports, drawings and specifications and newspaper and journal articles on the history of the Trustees and of the Bancroft family. Subjects covered include the development of the city park system and the Bancroft Parkway, the building and maintenance of the "Woodlawn Flats," the Citizens Housing Corporation, the development of post-World War II suburbs, the Quaker beliefs of the Trustees and discussions withing the Society of Friends over their development activities and the disputes over racial discrimination in housing and segregation in the suburbs. The papers of William Poole Bancroft, his wife Emma C. Bancroft and their children include family genealogies, pedigrees and biographies, including material on the family's antecedents in England, personal correspondence, material on their charitable activities, particularly their interest in African American education and Quaker schools and colleges, and also Samuel Bancroft Jr's. interest in collecting Pre-Raphaelite art, which he bequeathed to the Delaware Art Museum.

The typescript contains an account of Gentieu's relations with the Du Pont Company, particularly dealing with its treatment of its employees, from 1877 to 1902. Gentieu was a beneficiary of the paternalistic system of labor relations then maintained by the company, which colors his account. There are numerous references to members of the du Pont family under whom Gentieu worked.
