Lee, Maurice du Pont, 1885-1974

Hide Profile

Maurice du Pont Lee was born on January 10, 1885, the son of Cazenove Gardner Lee and Marguerite Lammot du Pont, a great-granddaughter of E. I. du Pont, the founder of the Du Pont Company. After retiring in 1950 as General Advisor to the Chief Engineer of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, Lee took an active interest in Wilmington civic affairs, especially in the Board of Park Commissioners, of which he was president (1950-1965). He was active in other charitable and civic affairs, on matters as varied as alcoholism, anti-communism, crime reduction and prison reform, help for the handicapped, foreign mission, hospitals and nursing homes, and slum clearance. Lee was particularly interested in mobilizing the talent of retirees in community service. This activity, coordinated by the organization of Consulting and Advisory Services, which he created in Wilmington, drew national attention after the publication of two articles defining his views, both later condensed for the Reader's Digest. Lee died in Wilmington on January 2, 1974.
