Joint Commission on a Common Hymnal and Joint Commission on a Common Liturgy. Church Presidents Correspondence and Other Material [1944-1958]

Title: Church Presidents Correspondence and Other Material [1944-1958]

This series mainly comprises correspondence retained by the chairman of the two commissions charged with creating a new service book and hymnal, known as the Joint Commission on a Common Liturgy and the Joint Commission on a Common Hymnal. The chairman, Dr. Luther D. Reed, of what was then known as the Mt. Airy Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, generated and retained these records during the course of administering his duties as chairman of these two commissions. The correspondence is between Dr. Reed and the presidents of the eight cooperating churches of these two commissions. Records in this series date from 1944-1960, but the handwritten and typewritten correspondence date only from 1944-1958. It is bound into one volume with sections devoted to the correspondence between Dr. Reed and each president. Subject matter of this correspondence ranges from issues surrounding the creation of these commissions in 1944 and 1945, those related to the activities of creating the new liturgy and hymnal throughout the remainder of the 1940s and early 1950s, and then the debut of the new hymnal and its promotion among members of cooperating churches in the late 1950s. In addition to the correspondence, there is one folder related to the continuation of the work of these joint commissions under the name Permanent Commission on the Liturgy and Hymnal. There is also one folder with four black and white photographs: two showing the first meeting of the Commission on a Common Hymnal, the predecessor to the joint commissions, one photograph of members of the joint commissions in 1957, and one photograph of commission member Dr. E.E. Ryden and church member Mrs. Fritiof Fryxell working on arrangement of liturgical settings for the new service book.

Records include a copy of the proposed BFM constitution which ultimately was enacted and known as the "Rules and Regulations." Also included are copies for every regular meeting of the BFM, including its first one. There are copies of minutes from several special BFM meetings and executive committee meetings. Subject matter of correspondence primarily includes missionary personnel and financial matters. The bulk of the correspondence relates to mission work in Japan. Other records include brief articles about the history of UELC mission efforts and booklets highlighting the mission fields of the UELC. Minutes include some Japan Mission Committee meetings, but mostly United Lutheran Church in America (ULCA) Board of Foreign Missions (BFM) meetings (see also ULCA 19) where Japan mission work, in which the UELC was in partnership with the ULCA, was discussed. This material includes minutes as well as agenda and exhibits provided prior to meetings. Correspondence is to the UELC BFM and the UELC Japan Mission Committee. Subject matter contained of this correspondence includes budgeting matters, missionary personnel and financial matters, inquiries from those interested in becoming missionaries, and inquiries from congregations interested in sponsoring missionaries. Eben-Ezer Lutheran Care Center. Records 1924-1995

This series comprises records generated by Eben-Ezer Lutheran Care Center and retained by the Deaconess Community of the ELCA. Dates are 1924-1995. Record types include a constitution, correspondence, books, periodical issues, pamphlets, leaflets, list of deaconesses, reports, orders of worship, funeral service bulletin, clippings, picture postcards, a video, and others. Most records are printed or typed, but a few are handwritten. The typewritten report by Sister Anna Poulsen in the first folder is of special interest, as are the issues of the periodical Una Sancta. This periodical was started by the Rev. Jens Madsen, the founder of Eben-Ezer. The issues here contain a serial publication "Retrospective Musings of an Old Man," in which Pastor Madsen describes the founding of Eben-Ezer. The 1952 report of the National Lutheran Council (NLC) of the study of Eben-Ezer which the NLC conducted is also of interest and is supplemented by much of the correspondence, letters to and from Sister Anna Ebert, directing sister of the Philadelphia Motherhouse of Deaconesses. Letters from Sisters Bertha Roose and Sigrid Nelson, directing sisters at Eben-Ezer, the Rev. Victor E. Bagger, superintendent at Eben-Ezer, and Henrietta Lund of the National Lutheran Council, and Sister Anna Ebert's replies, address the problems at Eben-Ezer in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Other correspondents include Sister Anna Poulsen, the Rev. K. M. Ludvigsen, the Rev. Anders Steensen, Sister Katherine Mohrsen, Pastor Jens Madsen, and Sister Ingeborg Hansen, who write on various topics. English is the primary language, but a few records are in Danish. There are 15 picture postcards and 41 photographs. All of the postcards and 40 of the photographs as black and white; one photograph is in color. Condition of the records is good.

Records in this series comprise those related to the work of the Joint Commission on a Common Liturgy. Originally, these records were those of the commission chairman, Dr. Luther D. Reed and most of the correspondence is written to or from him. These records date from 1944-1959, are in six bound volumes, and include subject matter related to creation of the liturgy for the new Lutheran service book and hymnal. Subjects include occasional services, the Eucharistic prayer, Revised Standard Version and Authorized Version for the lectionary, prayers for the whole church, psalms, the request of the Evangelical Lutheran Church to publish a supplement to the service book and hymnal, and translation of the liturgy into Spanish and German. Record types include handwritten and typewritten business correspondence, reports, topical articles, meeting minutes, memoranda, lists, studies, and agenda. Of note, there were no minutes taken for the first meeting of the commission. Records are arranged by subject, but in terms of arrangement within the bound volumes, each is divided into a title section. The container list include a citation for the contents that include box, bound volume number, section number, and a contents list for that section.

This series comprises material relating to several aspects of the Board of Foreign Missions for the United Evangelical Lutheran Church (UELC) from 1930-1961. Typewritten and handwritten records include business correspondence, printed material, agenda, meeting minutes, reports, and other miscellaneous records. Some of the correspondence predates the creation of the Board of Foreign Missions (BFM), but for the most part, these records were created during the existence of the BFM, 1946-1960. The records provide a basic overview of mission efforts of the UELC and the workings of the BFM. Joint Commission on a Common Hymnal. Records [1944-1958]

This series comprises records related to the work of the Joint Commission on a Common Hymnal, a cooperative body of representatives of eight Lutheran church bodies in the United States charged with creating a new hymnal for use by these church bodies. The records date from 1944-1958. Those in the bound volumes came from Dr. Luther D. Reed, chairman of this commission and also the Joint Commission on a Common Liturgy. The other records in this series came from PA 57/1 Dr. E.E. Ryden Papers. Dr. Ryden was a member of the joint commission working on the hymnal. These records as well as Dr. Reed's records were generated during the course of work on the common hymnal. Subject matter in these records includes hymns texts and well as tunes. In terms of records types, there are meeting minutes and agenda, handwritten and typewritten business correspondence, articles, topical reports, progress reports, sheet music, and proof sheets. Correspondence is written by or to Dr. Reed and pertains to the work of the commission. In addition to the general work of the commission, it also received suggestions and requests for specific tunes and hymn text to be included in the new hymnal. These suggestions and requests came from church headquarters, synods, conference, and individuals. It should not be assumed that records in the bound volumes represent a complete accounting of all record types and subject matter during the twelve years the commission conducted its work. In some cases the bound volumes only contain what is referred to as "sampling" of certain subject matter. In one of these cases where only a sampling was included, additional textual studies separated from PA 57/1 were added to this series. Records are arranged by subject, but in terms of arrangement within the bound volumes, each is divided into titled sections. The container list include a citation for the contents that includes box, bound volume number, section number, and a contents list for that section.
