Records in this series comprise those related to the work of the Joint Commission on a Common Liturgy. Originally, these records were those of the commission chairman, Dr. Luther D. Reed and most of the correspondence is written to or from him. These records date from 1944-1959, are in six bound volumes, and include subject matter related to creation of the liturgy for the new Lutheran service book and hymnal. Subjects include occasional services, the Eucharistic prayer, Revised Standard Version and Authorized Version for the lectionary, prayers for the whole church, psalms, the request of the Evangelical Lutheran Church to publish a supplement to the service book and hymnal, and translation of the liturgy into Spanish and German. Record types include handwritten and typewritten business correspondence, reports, topical articles, meeting minutes, memoranda, lists, studies, and agenda. Of note, there were no minutes taken for the first meeting of the commission. Records are arranged by subject, but in terms of arrangement within the bound volumes, each is divided into a title section. The container list include a citation for the contents that include box, bound volume number, section number, and a contents list for that section.
