They include a notebook listing books owned by Ward's brother, Charles H. Ward, dated 1847; a pocket address book, dating from the 1860s; a recipe book; nine volumes of Ward's diaries, dating from 1854, 1858-1859, 1860-1861, 1864-1865, 1867; a diary kept by Mrs. Ward in 1875; five volumes of manuscript poems, one dated 1883-1884, another dated 1888; seven volumes of college notebooks and lecture notes, dating from 1858-1859, and 1863-1864.

Records consist primarily of correspondence of officers and others of the United States Sanitary Commission, including Frederick Law Olmsted, Secretary, and Dr. Robert Ware, Inspector, concerning arranging for supplies and medical personnel to aid Northern soldiers wounded in the Civil War. Also, telegrams, notices, and circulars; and lists of wounded soldiers, 1861. Minutes of the Metropolitan Fair in aid of the Commission, 1863-1864; and a scrapbook of the Fair containing leaflets, folders, books, tickets, and magazines concerning various activities of the Fair, 1864.

Title: Sanitary Fairs Collection, 1749-1867 (bulk 1864).

The Sanitary Fairs Collection consists largely of ephemera and manuscripts documenting the efforts made by citizens to raise awareness and funds for the United States Sanitary Commission. Most of the material is from the Great Central Fair held in Philadelphia in June 1864, and includes circulars letters, forms, handbills, correspondence, and miscellaneous printed material generated by the various committees set up to collect objects and financial donations for the fair, and to arrange and staff the fair's sales booths and exhibits. Two additional folders of material for the Relics, Curiosities, and Autographs committee have examples of the autographs (dating 1749-1851) that were sold at their booth and remain in their special printed enclosures from the fair. The collection holds the correspondence files of one particular office, the Committee for Labor, Incomes and Revenues, whose chair and treasurer were, respectively, Philadelphia merchants L. Montgomery Bond and John W. Claghorn. The collection also contains limited ephemera from fairs in Albany, Baltimore, Brooklyn, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Elmira, Indianapolis, New York, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, and Muscatine, Iowa.

Worthington Whittredge papers

Title: Worthington Whittredge papers

The papers of landscape painter Worthington Whittredge measure 1.8 linear feet and date from the 1840s to 1965, with the bulk of the papers dating from 1849 to 1908. This small collection documents Whittredge's career as a painter, particularly his years in Europe from 1849 to 1859, through biographical materials, a manuscript of his autobiography, news clippings, catalogs, six sketchbooks and numerous drawings and paintings. Also found are two photographs of Whittredge and a nineteenth-century photo album containing photographs of 32 famous artists.
