Jack Levine papers
Title:
Jack Levine papers
The papers of New York social realist painter and printmaker Jack Levine date from 1923-1999, and measure 3.2 linear feet. Levine's career is documented through biographical material, scattered letters, notes and a speech, writings, student drawings, three scrapbooks, printed material and nearly one linear foot of photographs of Levine, his family, and his colleagues.Found within the papers are two driver's licenses and several biographical accounts, and scattered letters from colleagues including one each from John Taylor Arms, Hyman Bloom, Leonard Bocour, René d'Harnoncourt, Lloyd Goodrich, Jacob Lawrence, and Homer Saint-Gaudens discussing various art-related events. There is only one carbon copy of a letter written by Levine. The correspondence includes oversized photographs of the members of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Additional photographs of the members are found in the Photograph series. Notes and writings are primarily typescripts about Jack Levine written by others. There is also a transcript of one speech, "Jack Levine Speaks Regarding the Donation of 108 of his Drawings to the Archives" delivered by Levine at the Fogg Art Museum.Artwork consists entirely of Levine's student drawings including anatomical studies, neighborhood genre scenes, copies of Old Masters, and a series of images of symphony musicians. Some of the drawings display themes that are reflected in his later paintings.Three scrapbooks contain clippings that document Levine's career and reflect his political interests. Additional printed material consists of a comprehensive collection of clippings and exhibition announcements and catalogs. There is also an announcement for a lecture by Levine, press releases, calendars of events, reproductions of artwork, programs, brochures including one for <emph render="italic">Facing East</emph>, a portfolio of Levine's prints, and three books.Photographs include numerous photographs of Levine throughout his artistic career, including images of his wife, painter Ruth Gikow, their daughter Susanna, and colleagues including Hyman Bloom, Leonard Bocour, Alexander Dobkin, Joachim Probst, and Russian poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko. Especially notable is a series of photographs of Levine printmaking with Emiliano Sorini and Ruth Gikow. There are photographs of Levine serving on art juries and panels with Eleanor Coen, Joseph Hirsch, Gabor Peterdi, Studs Terkel, and Max Weber, and attending events with Lawrence Fleischman, Betty Friedan, Edith Halpert, Mauricio Lasansky, Gypsy Rose Lee, Pope Paul VI, and Raphael Soyer. A small album contains photographs of Levine and various buildings in Boston. There are also photographs of miscellaneous exhibition installations including Levine's retrospective at the Jewish Museum, and of artwork by Levine and others.Group photographs of the members of the American Academy of Arts and Letters are found here, and include Will Barnet, Paul Cadmus, Chuck Close, David Levine, George Tooker, and John Updike. Additional group photographs of the members that were originally enclosed with letters are found in the correspondence series.

Alfred M. Gruenther Papers. 1941 - 1978. Photographs
Title:
Alfred M. Gruenther Papers. 1941 - 1978. Photographs
This series consists of photographs accumulated by Alfred M. Gruenther between the beginning of the Second World War and his death in 1983. The majority of the photographs fall into two groups. Photos in the first group concern Gruenther's U.S. Army career while at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), where he served as Chief of Staff and then Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR). Some of these photos were taken at SHAPE locations in France and Belgium. Other locations featured include Fontainebleau, France; Lisbon, Portugal; Rome, Italy; Luxembourg; Ottawa, Ontario; and places in West Germany, England, Malta, Greece, and Turkey. Many SHAPE personnel, European leaders, and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) diplomats appear in these photographs. Also included are photos of SHAPE alumni banquets and meetings of the SHAPE Officers' Association. Photos in the second group concern Gruenther's term as president of the American National Red Cross from 1957-1964. In this capacity Gruenther was photographed visiting foreign countries such as the Philippines, where he met members of the Philippine National Red Cross, and speaking at institutions and events across the United States. Gruenther is shown at Columbia University; at Ft. Myer, Virginia; Assumption College, Worcester, Massachusetts; at Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska; and at Boy Scouts of America events. During this time, he also attended several annual Forrestal Award Dinners presented by the National Security Industrial Association. A set of 11 photos included in the series were used by Gruenther during an appearance on the Today Show in 1962 to illustrate disaster relief undertaken by the Red Cross. Another set of photos features Barbara Eisenhower visiting the Hellenic Red Cross Headquarters in Athens, Greece, in 1959. Also included in the series are 27 portraits of American Red Cross staff members. Other photographs in the series show Gruenther speaking in later years to a meeting of the Jewish War Veterans of the United States of America in New York City, at Madigan General Hospital in Tacoma, Washington, and at the National War College in Washington, D.C. He also appears attending a lecture at the National Defense University at Fort McNair, Washington, D.C. A few photos show Gruenther at Bohemian Grove encampments. The series also contains a variety of photographs of Dwight D. Eisenhower taken at various important times and places, including at the White House, addressing the United Nations General Assembly, and on visits to countries around the world. The series includes photographs removed from three photograph albums. The first was given to Gruenther by Loyola University of Los Angeles after he spoke at commencement exercises in 1965. The second was given to him by Seattle University after he spoke at commencement exercises in 1956. The third was compiled and given to Gruenther by WOJG Margaret J. Finnegan upon her departure from service in his office at SHAPE, ca. 1954. Most photographs in this last album are SHAPE photographs. Other persons of interest appearing in this series include Sherman Adams, Vincent Auriol, Milton G. Baker, King Baudouin of Belgium, Joseph Bech, Georges Bidault, Robert Bostwick Carney, Donald F. Carpenter, Winston Churchill, Mark W. Clark, John Boyd Coates, Russell E. Dougherty, Anthony Eden, John S. D. Eisenhower, Mamie Doud Eisenhower, Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain, Gerald R. David A. Morse Papers 1895-2003. 1942-1990
Title:
David A. Morse Papers 1895-2003. 1942-1990
The David A. Morse Papers document the life and times of David Abner Morse (1907-1990), American lawyer, soldier, and public official. While he distinguished himself in legal, military, and governmental circles, the most fruitful years of his life were spent at the helm of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the oldest member of the United Nations' family of specialized agencies. As Director-General of the International Labour Office in Geneva from 1948 to 1970, Morse guided the increasingly complex activities of this tripartite organization, which unites in one body the representatives of workers, governments, and employers. No one has had a longer tenure as its head, and no one has presided over such far-reaching changes in its composition and orientation. Drawing on a variety of experiences in the field of domestic and international labor, including appointments as Assistant, Under, and Acting Secretary of Labor in the Truman administration, Morse gave practical meaning in a postwar context to the ILO's underlying philosophy, namely, that "universal and lasting peace can be established only if it is based upon social justice." The pursuit of this object won for the ILO the Nobel Peace Prize in 1969. The David Morse Papers contain correspondence, reports, memoranda, photographs, and newspaper clippings that document this long, productive career.

Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
Title:
Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
The official organ of the Communist Party, USA, the Daily Worker's editorial positions reflected the policies of the Communist Party. At the same time the paper also attempted to speak to the broad left-wing community in the United States that included labor, civil rights, and peace activists, with stories covering a wide range of events, organizations and individuals in the United States and around the world. As a daily newspaper, it covered the major stories of the twentieth century. However, the paper always placed an emphasis on radical social movements, social and economic conditions particularly in working class and minority communities, poverty, labor struggles, racial discrimination, right wing extremism with an emphasis on fascist and Nazi movements, and of course the Soviet Union and the world-wide Communist movement. The paper has had a succession of names and has been published in varying frequences between daily to weekly over the course of its existence. In 2010 it ceased print publication and became an electronic, online-only, weekly publication titled the People's World. The bulk of the collection consists of printed photographic images produced through a variety of processes, collected by the photography editors of the Daily Worker and its successor newspapers as a means of maintaining an organized collection of images for use in publication. Images of many important people, groups and events associated with the CPUSA and the American Left are present in the collection, as well as images of a wide variety of people, subjects and events not explicitly linked with the CPUSA or Left politics.
