In letters to his wife, Anna, chiefly 1861-1864, Morgan discusses the death of George Harris, the first Battle of Manassas, and his weariness over the length of the war. A letter to Anna Morgan from Daniel Henry Morgan in the Prisoner's Camp, Point Lookout, 1863 October 8, states that he has received the box sent from home, and that there is little hope of exchange. Letters to Morgan, 1866-1889, from Jubal A. Early, Fitzhugh Lee, Robert E. Lee, John Letcher, Thomas Munford, George L. Peyton, and Thomas L. Rosser, concern business; a Confederate reunion; the exchange of photographs and letters; Minneapolis, Minn., in 1884; the Virginia Hotel, Staunton, Va.; and an attack on Thomas L. Greene describes his capture by Lomax's cavalry following the battle of Trevilian Station and his subsequent imprisonment in a military prison at Charleston, S.C. He mentions meeting Fitzhugh Lee and Col. Munford, staying at Charlottesville and Richmond, Va., for brief periods after his capture, his illness in prison and his acquaintance with Col. Litchfield, a fellow prisoner.

The collection contains letters, commissions, orders, notes, reports, and clippings pertaining to Lee's service in the U.S. cavalry in the West and in the C.S.A. cavalry. Post-Civil War material includes correspondence, speeches, and clippings about Civil War incidents and leaders, especially James Longstreet and the battle of Gettysburg. Other material concerns his travels, his service as consul-general at Havana during the Cuban revolution and in the Spanish American War. Business interests are represented by correspondence and papers pertinent to the American Animal Tether Company, the Chicago Town Company of Virginia, the Pittsburgh and Virginia Railroad Company, the Rockbridge Company, and the South Boston Improvement Company. There is some material, chiefly financial and legal documents, of the Lee and related Mason family ancestors including Northern Neck land grants and a deed of gift for a slave, as well as a diary of Mrs. Sidney Smith Lee. Among items of interest are an 1859 report by Earl Van Dorn on a skirmish with Commanches, confidential communications of Lee, Robert E. Lee and Jeb Stuart including telegrams to Stuart before Yellow Tavern, Fitzhugh Lee's report on the Appomattox campaign, letters regarding events of the Cuban revolution including the Isle of Pines uprising, the U.S.S. Maine, and an incident involving General Shafter, and a letter from a former driver offering to serve in the Spanish American War.

The collection consists of two slave lists. The first, undated list, contains the names of 99 slave owners whose slaves were impressed for thirty days by the Confederate Army. Among the owners named are University of Virginia law professor James P. Holcombe and Confederate Colonel Thomas T. Munford. The second concerns slaves who fled to the Union army and contains the names of the slave holders; whether the slaves were owned or hired; the number who escaped, and in some instances their ages, date of escape, and names. Professor Holcombe is listed as having lost 10, none named. Almost all listed fled on the 17th of June 1864, when Union General David Hunter's troops skirmished with Jubal Early at Lynchburg.

Century Company records

Title: Century Company records

The Century Company published the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, which was widely regarded as the best general periodical of its time, performing a role as cultural arbiter during the 1880s and 1890s. It was founded in New York City in 1881 and also published the children's magazine St. Nicholas, dictionaries, and books. The Century Company records date from 1870 to the 1930s and chiefly contain correspondence with contributors, readers, public figures, and literary agents. A number of manuscripts and proofs in the collection are extensively edited and taken with annotations on letters provide a detailed record of the outlook, standards, and functions of the company.
