Variant namesThe 4th Virginia Cavalry was organized in September 19, 1861 and reorganized in April, 1862. After the reorganization, the regiment was under the command of Williams Carter Wickham (1820-1888). The regiment, assigned to General Jeb Stuart's, Fitzhugh Lee's, and Wickham's Brigades, participated in every major battle and campaign that involved the Army of Northern Virginia, from the 1st Bull Run to Appomattox Court House.
