The papers consist of letters written by Putnam to business associates and friends, particularly J. Lorimer Graham, Jr. Letters to Graham regard Union League Club meetings and introductions to English acquaintances. Letters pertaining to his publishing business discuss possible articles for Putnam's Monthly Magazine including a rejection of one by [Charles Carroll?] Everett, Pierre Munro Irving's biography of Washington Irving, Frank Moore's "Rebellion Record" and the stagnant book trade of 1861. There is also a letter, 1901, from George Haven Putnam to Gustavus Myers declining to publish his history of the great American fortunes as it would be objectionable to family members, particularly Helen Gould.

Diary kept by Graham (Feb. 1848-Oct. 1949) recording both his business and personal activities. He writes of his work as cashier for Howland and Aspinwall, matters of interest to the firm, fellow employees, business and social activities of his employers (William and John Aspinwall, and Gardiner and Samuel Howland), his friends and relatives, prominent people he meets, news from his friends Cunningham Drake and James L. Graham who are living in Europe, arrivals and departures of ships, numbers of people buying passage to California during the Gold Rush, social activities and public entertainments in New York, and activities of his father, Nathan Burr Graham, Jr., including his stay in Washington during the inauguraton of Zachary Taylor as president.

The bulk of the collection contains forty-five letters, 1851- 1855, Stoddard wrote to Margaret Jane Muzzey Sweat, wife of diplomat Lorenzo di Medici Sweat, her most intimate female friend. Recurring themes include her ill health, caustic comments and gossip about other writers, and poor finances. Also, includes letters to Margaret Sweat from Annie F. Wilson and H. Inez Weston. Stoddard writes about literary men and women (Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Robert Browning, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Paul Hamilton Hayne, Herman Melville, Fitz James O'Brien, Thomas Buchanan Read, William Gilmore Simms, Bayard Taylor, Alfred Tennyson); her relationship with her husband Richard Henry Stoddard; her Barstow relatives, particularly brother Wilson; and her thoughts and beliefs about womanhood. In letters to Josephine and James Lorimer Graham, Stoddard writes of her son Willy's illness and death two months later; the Civil War; advance notice that Carleton will publish her novel, The Morgesons; comments on the success of The Morgesons; becoming acquainted with Edwin Booth, his drinking, and the death of his wife, Mary. To Mrs. Bunce for her husband, Richard Henry Stoddard, with strong opinions about literature. To Emma Lambourn she writes of the death of Bayard Taylor; to Ernest D. North of Charles Scribners Sons she praises Henry Kingsley's novels. Emma Carleton writes to Mrs. Frederick Gotthold, 1911, about reading Stoddard's works. Also, includes two of Stoddard's poems, "Mary Booth" and the unpublished "The stone face," and an untitled short story with a photograph of Stoddard.

In (4) he wishes Winter would hear the Shakespearean readings of Sydney Woollett. Also, a poem to James Lorimer Graham, Jr. accompanying a volume of Shakespeare's sonnets and beginning, What can I give him, who so much hath given, 1864. Poem listed in the Folger card index of first lines. 2 essays, "The English Laureates" and "Romeo and Juliet", 1892; the title-page to "The Lion's Cub", 1890; and an obituary notice.

This collection contains mostly entomological material, with much information on the description and identification of particular insects, entomological collections, and the study of entomology in Europe and the United States. In addition, there are materials on medicine and hospitals during the American Civil War, on the Corps of Topographical Engineers, the United States Army, on natural history in the United States, and on the LeConte's family. Some letters are written to President Rutherford B. Hayes and concern the Commissionership of Agriculture, for which LeConte was considered, but not appointed. Letters of John Eatton LeConte and Joseph LeConte are included.
