The National Council of American-Soviet Friendship succeeded the National Council on Soviet Relations, founded in 1941. The NCSR grew out of the more overtly radical American-Soviet friendship movement of the 1930's, whose organizational center was the Friends of the Soviet Union founded in 1929. The Council, composed largely of professionals who were sympathetic to Socialism, believed that the USSR and the United States should join together in their common fight against fascism. In 1946, the House Un-American Activities Committee began a formal investigation of NCASF, and in 1947, it was indicted for failure to register with the Subversive Activities Control Board. Throughout its operation, the NCASF issued numerous pamphlets and bibliographies about life in the Soviet Union, as well as information on American-Soviet relations. The collection includes the correspondence of the NCASF's principal officers, publications, flyers, scrapbooks,and photographs.

Earl Browder Papers, 1879-1990

Title: Earl Browder Papers 1879-1990

Papers of the General secretary of the Communist Party of the United States from 1930 through its dissolution in 1944. When the Party was reconstituted as the Communist Political Association later that year, Browder was chosen as its President, however he was expelled in 1946 following a debate over Party leadership. Following his expulsion, Browder lectured and wrote about Marxism and represented Soviet writers and publishers for publication in the United States. Collection incluces correspondence/subject files (1879-1970) relating to Marxist philosophy, the workings of the C.P.U.S.A., Browder's role within the Party and to Browder's business ventures as well as legal files (1938-1958); manuscripts (1924-1967) of Browder and others, including Browder's manuscripts for articles, books, memoranda, news releases, pamphlets, reports, and speeches; and memorabilia including personal files and photographs of Browder and his family, and some colleagues. Notable correspondents include Roger Baldwin, Daniel Bell, Bruce Bliven, Rudy Blum, Louis B. Boudin, Juan Antonio Corretjer, Theodore Draper, Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, William Z. The Labor Research Association was founded in 1927 by Grace Hutchins, Anna Rochester, and Robert Dunn (LRA's director from 1927-1975) along with Solon DeLeon and Alexander Trachtenberg. Hutchins was the principal writer on wage-earning women for the Communist Party of the United States of America; Rochester, a Marxist historian, economist, and Communist Party member, and Hutchins' lifelong companion. The LRA was politically close to the CPUSA and its purpose was to "conduct investigations and studies of social, economic, and political questions in the interest of the labor movement." The principal activities of the LRA have been research, consulting, and the publication of books, pamphlets, articles, and serials on issues of concern to the labor movement. The seventeen volumes of the Labor Fact Book, published between 1931 and 1965, were widely circulated reference books. The collection consists mainly of unpublished manuscripts and reports, research notes and memos, and correspondence, a good portion of which deals with individuals and organiations who opposed the labor movement, including "labor spies." Also included in the collection are personal memorabilia and other materials documenting Dunn's related political activities.

The Reference Center for Marxist Studies (RCMS) was a radical library housed in the headquarters of the Communist Party of the United States of America (CPUSA) in New York City. The Center was founded in the late 1970s or early 1980s. Its pamphlet collection consists of more than 10,000 pamphlets and includes nearly every pamphlet published by the CPUSA. It also includes pamphlets published by hundreds of organizations affiliated with or of interest to the CPUSA, and English language pamphlets published in the Soviet Union and other Communist countries. The pamphlets cover over 800 subject areas including: Communist Party activities throughout its history, anticommunism and the struggle against McCarthyism, the civil rights, labor and peace movements, the Spanish Civil War, anti-colonial and national liberation movements, and various Communist countries.

The Communist Party of the United States of America (CPUSA) is a Marxist-Leninist political organization that was founded in Chicago in 1919. The CPUSA played a pivotal role in many significant political and social movements of the 20th century. Its Party platform focused largely on working class issues such as fair wages and unemployment, civil rights for racial and ethnic minorities, civil liberties for politically persecuted communities, economic justice for the poor, the unemployed and for immigrants, and international peace efforts. The Party's work left an indelible mark in the arena of progressive politics and made it an influential force in the labor movement, particularly from the 1920s to the 1940s. Its varied political, social, and cultural initiatives attracted the support of a number of prominent artists, intellectuals, and activists, including Woody Guthrie, Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Angela Davis. Though the CPUSA's strength and size declined sharply following World War II and the advent of the Cold War and McCarthyism, it remains committed to socialism, peace, economic and social justice, and civil rights and liberties. The records of the Communist Party, USA provide vivid documentation of the organization's trajectory from its birth in 1919 to the early 2000s. The collection includes a diverse mix of correspondence, convention and conference materials, essays and manuscripts, internal discussion documents, reports, speech transcripts, research files, printed ephemera, clippings, legal documents, photographs, posters, audio tapes, films, videos, and a wealth of personal papers. Though materials from as early as 1892 can be found in the collection, the bulk of the records were created between 1950 and 1990. A more comprehensive record of the CPUSA's early 20th century activity can be found in the Files of the Communist Party of the USA in the Comintern Archives, 1919-1943 (Microfilm R-7548).

Papers of the labor economist, historian, and teacher, who investigated the Americanization of immigrant workers, the steel strike of 1919, and the labor movement and cooperatives in France between 1918-1929, and who served as senior research associate for the Twentieth Century Fund from 1934-1945. From 1935-1940 Saposs was chief economist for the National Labor Relations Board, a position he was forced to resign because of House Un-American Activities Committee accusations that he was a Communist, though he served other government agencies from 1940 to 1954. Included are biographical materials; correspondence with many labor and political leaders and economists; notes, drafts, and galleys of articles, pamphlets, and books; research files; and a teaching file mainly concerning Brookwood Labor College, 1922-1933. Also included is a taped interview (with transcription) concerning Saposs' association with Edwin E. Witte, Richard T. Ely, and John R. Commons, and his work with the National Labor Relations Board.

The collection contains materials generated by the organization's activities, including invitations, flyers, transcripts from speeches, records of planning meetings, and conference reports; correspondence; minutes; scrapbooks, materials pertaining to the Council's travel programs to the Soviet Union; administrative materials from the Campaign for a People's Peace Treaty, and materials from the Council's legal defense against the activities of of the Subversive Activities Control Board. The Administration series is divided into nine subseries. Subseries 1 documents the Council's formation and antecedents while subseries 2 documents the personal achievements of the Council's most eminent leaders, officers and supporters. Subseries 3 contains fairly complete minutes of the Executive Council and Board of Directors, while the minutes for the National Executive Board are incomplete. Subseries 4 contains reports, position papers, and statements for press release as well as documents meant for internal circulation. These materials reflect the Council's position on current events, including several unpopular Soviet actions and policies, and some organizational self-criticism. Subseries 5, Correspondence, is principally among Council members and with leaders of other progressive organization, as well as with celebrities who sponsored the work of the NCASF. About half of the correspondence is that of Richard Morford. Some prominent individuals with whom Morford corresponded were: Elmer Benson, Jerome Davis, Howard Fast, Shirley Graham DuBois, Alphaeus Hunton, A.J. Muste, Otto Nathan, Scott Nearing, Paul Robeson, Jessica Smith, Anna Louise Strong, Alexander Trachtenberg, Mary Van Kleeck and Harry Ward. Thc Council's general correspondence contains letters from Claude Pepper, Edward Stettinius, Henry Stimson and Willard Uphaus. Subseries 6, Legal, contains several charters and contracts, as well as all correspondence and documents such as motions, court transcripts, etc. pertaining to the Council's legal defense. It also contains documents pertainent to individual indictments of Council officers Morford, Corliss Lamont, John Kingsbury, and Alan Thomson. Subseries 7 contains records of early members and sponsors, and the subsequent withdrawal of many of them. Subseries 8, Committees and Local Councils contains materials generated by the NCASF's various committees (several of which represented progressives in the professions), and by the local branches in 25 cities and regions. Subseries 9 documents the Council's creation and distribution of educational materials, its Russian language classes, and circulation of Soviet films in the U.S. Series II is divided into four subseries. The first, Activities, is the largest in the collection. The bulk of this series documents events from the 1940's and 1950's, such as rallies, concerts, art exhibits, conference and receptions. Also included are files on recurring NCASF events, such as the annual Red Army Dinners. Beginning in the late 1940's the scale and kind of activities gradually changed, from mass political rallies to smaller, cultural events, reflecting the changes in the national political climate and the onset of the Cold War. Subseries 2, contains material from travel programs and tours, chiefly applications and lists of delegations to the Council's Camp Artek program. Subseries 3, Campaign for a People's Peace Treaty/People's Appeal fof Peace (1982-89), documents the administration and activities of this Council-sponsored organization which circulated a peace petition to Mikhail Gorbachev, and to Ronald Reagan, who refused to accept the petition. Subseries 4 contains publications and newsletters of, and some correspondence with, other organizations concerned with American-Soviet relations. Series IX. Scrapbooks, consists of nine scrapbooks containing clippings documenting aspects of the NCASF's activities from 1942-1950, including the Denver chapter, and the 1945 visit of the Dean of Canterbury.
