Alfred Russel Wallace Collection, 1867-1913
Title:
Alfred Russel Wallace Collection 1867-1913
A prime exponent of evolutionary theory in the late nineteenth century, the British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace arrived independently at the theory of natural selection nearly simultaneously with Charles Darwin. The numerous publications that emerged from his extended field excusions into the Amazon Basin and the Malay Archipelago (Indonesia) Wallace resulted in major contributions to evolutionary theory, biogeography, ecology, and ethnography, and made Wallace, by the end of his life, one of the best known naturalists in Britain. A Socialist, social progressive, and Spiritualist, Wallace's distinctive take on evolutionary change differed from the Darwinian mainstream in significant ways. The Wallace Collection is a miscellaneous assemblage of letters written by and to Alfred Russel Wallace, primarily during the last twenty five years of his life. Varied in content, the letters touch on Wallace's views on evolution, Spiritualism, and to a less degree, his progressive social commitments.

Crane, Walter, 1845-1915. Letters, 1871-1914.
Title:
Letters, 1871-1914.
Letters by Crane to various correspondents concerning his work, exhibitions, and personal matters. Of special interest are seven letters to Sir James Dromgole Linton discussing artistic matters, the Art Workers Guild, the South London Art Gallery, and the invention of a method of tapestry-painting in indelible colors (1884-1895); to Gleeson White on the effect of the camera on art (1893); and to Edmund Evans about printing colors (1884). In an extensive 7 p. letter to Henry Holiday Crane discusses Sir Ebenezer Howard's 'To-morrow: a peaceful path to social reform' (London, 1898). Crane expresses his ideas about planning a "garden city", the ideal of a planned residential community. Crane criticizes Howard's scheme as lacking the means to prevent the accumulation of capital in private hands and thus becoming a commercial enterprise. Letters concerning plans for exhibitions include one to T.J. Cobden-Sanderson about a possible combined Morris/Burne-Jones exhibition to be held by the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society (1898). With one letter from the Art editor of 'Black and White' apologizing for attributing Crane's 'The Bridge of Life' to George Fredrick Watts (1896). Arranged chronologically.

Edmund Evans Etchings After Randolph Caldecott, 1897-1907
Title:
Edmund Evans Etchings After Randolph Caldecott, 1897-1907
Edmund Evans (1826-1905) was born in Southwark, London, England. In 1840, he was apprenticed to wood-engraver Ebenezer Landells. He started a business as a wood-engraver, first on Fleet St., then on Racquet Court and became known as a color engraver. The collection consists of two etchings on steel from drawings by Randolph Caldecott. There are also three prints from the above two etchings, as well as another made by the Camberwell School of Arts in 1986, together with a brief history of these plates.
