Typed copies of letters of Tucker to James Henry Hammond, advocating state sovereignty and urging Hammond to take the lead in the 1850 secession movement in South Carolina. Throughout the correspondence are references to "the rights of the South," Tucker's love of Virginia, his objections to the Second Bank of the United States, his hatred of Martin Van Buren, construction of railroads, John C. Calhoun's ability, disturbances in Europe, and plans for the Nashville Convention of 1850. There are also brief references to Thomas R. Drew and George Frederick Holmes. Thirteen items are excerpts from letters of Tucker to Hammond; four letters are from Hammond to William Gilmore Simms relating to a new edition of Tucker's The Partisan Leader, the Nashville Convention, Tucker's character, and his death; one letter is from William B. Hodgson to Hammond relative to the Nashville Convention; and one original letter from Tucker to Henry A. Wise recommends an applicant for a position as postmaster.

Reminiscences fully entitled "Some recollections of my past life, of near (now) three score and ten years; for my grandchildren," written in four sections by David Holmes Conrad, a lawyer who spent part of his adult life in Missouri and part in Martinsburg, W. Va. His recollections include his childhood in Winchester, Va., with his parents Daniel and Rebecca (Holmes) Conrad, his education and choice of a legal career and subsequent move to Missouri, biographical sketches of prominent Missouri lawyers such as William Henry Ashley, David Barton, Joshua Barton, Edward Bates, and Nathaniel Beverley Tucker, and his legal work in Berkeley and Jefferson counties, W. Va., and Winchester, Va. He proposes limiting patronage of federal government to prevent graft, cites financial and banking corruption by the Johnson family of Kentucky and Missouri, Governor Benjamin Howard's bankruptcy, General Thomas A. Smith's treatment by James Monroe and the Senate, Governor Frederick Bates' Indian agency appointment, the power of Monroe in making land claims, and misuses of alleged Spanish grants. He criticizes Thomas Hart Benton's proposal for graduating the price of land, suggests that the federal government provide money for the relief of debt incurred by Missouri due to fall in land prices, and proposes reserving from sales, land for schools, mines, and salt springs, and appropriating money from sales to schools and improvement of navigable rivers, roads and canals. He mentions Edmund Burke and Richard Mentor Johnson.

Papers of the Cabell and related Bolling families contain slave censuses from "Bolling Hall" and "Pocahontas," Goochland County, Va. Individual topics include the War of 1812, a tedious legal case involving Judge Tucker, construction of a mill and a barn, "Soldier's Joy," "Corotoman," "Edgewood," the Female Seminary, Lynchburg, transporting hired slaves to Richmond, the James River and Kanawha Canal Company and company, tobacco prices, a Federal raid near Farmville in 1864, an attempted polygraph purchase, the building of a boat to transport wheat, Joseph C. Cabell's interest in running for office, and a "delicate chemical apparatus," possibly for the Universityof Virignia. The collection also contains account books, including one for tobacco sales, 1791-1792 and 1827-1845 that also contains miscellaneous accounts for Thomas Eston Randolph. Account book, ledger, memoranda book, and slave censuses for the Bolling family, 1796-1866, contain plantation records including crop lists, expenses, manager's wages, midwife accounts, slave hires and sales, and rations and clothing allotments for field hands with the note "All lost when freedom came." Estate papers of William C. R. Newburn, William Bolling administrator, 1835-1836, pertain to the sale of Newbern's slaves and includes names of slaves, purchasers and prices. There are also lists of taxable property, 1844 and 1862 that mention slaves; a note on the death of Anne Blaws Cocke Cabell and slave girl from diphtheria in 1862; an 1814 marriage indenture of William Newburn and Sarah Randolph, listing slaves; and an Hungarian Fund one dollar note, 1852.
