John McIntosh Kell (1823-1900) was born in Darien, McIntosh County, Georgia, and died at Sunnyside, Georgia. Kell graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1848 and later participated in Commodore Perry's expedition to Japan and the Paraguay Expedition of 1858. When the Civil War erupted, Kell resigned his United States commission and served briefly in the Georgia Navy before it was absorbed into the Confederate States Navy. He served as the executive Officer to Admiral Raphael Semmes aboard the CSS Alabama. Following the war, Kell retired to a life of farming and family as his home at Sunnyside, Georgia. In 1856 Kell married Julia Blanche Munroe of Macon. Together they bore ten children, of whom two died in 1863. In 1886 Governor John B. Gordon appointed Kell adjutant-general for the state of Georgia.

Title:
John McIntosh Kell family papers, 1784-1927.
The collection consists of papers of the John McIntosh Kell family and the DeVotie and d'Antignac family from 1784-1927. The papers contain correspondence, diaries, and photographs. The correspondence is mainly to Blanche Munroe Kell from family and friends. Of particular interest are letters from Juliette E. Mitchell, a YMCA employee in Europe during World War I. Papers relating to the DeVotie family include correspondence from Howard DeVotie while at school in Penfield (Ga.) and some material relating to Rev. James Harvey DeVotie including correspondence and pamphlets pertaining to the Cabin Creek Baptist Association (Ga.). The d'Antignac material mainly concerns the Aryan Order. The collection also contains diaries (1900, 1909-1911) of Blanche Munroe Kell mostly discussing family news and social life, a muster roll of the 10th Georgia Infantry Regiment, and daguerreotypes and cartes-de-visites of the Kell family.

John McIntosh Kell papers 1815-1891.
The John McIntosh Kell papers consist of a planter's journal for three plantations presumably owned or operated by the Munroe family near Macon, Ga.; an undated, unidentified slave list; a diary of Julia Blanche Munroe Kell, John's wife, which records the grief she felt at the death of her two children in September 1863; a letter written by Mrs. Kell to her father at their family home at Sylvan Lodge, October 1864; and a letter from Kell to W.E. Mitchell of New York City, April 30, 1891, 1 p. ALS. Kell declines request of him by Mitchell in behalf of the Young People's Association of Mitchell's church. The collection also includes two cased images: one of John McIntosh Kell taken in the late 1850s and one of Blanche and their son, Nathan Munroe Kell, taken c.1857, and one print of the Kells in front of their Sunnyside home. The collection is arranged chronologically.
