The collection consists of two letters from John McIntosh Kell while serving in the Confederate Navy on board the Savannah (ship) in 1861. The first letter, to his father-in-law N.C. Munroe dated March 22, 1861, discusses the actions of Commodore Josiah Tattnall and the removal of guns from Ft. Clinch (Fla.) to Ft. Pulaski (Ga.). The second letter, dated March 25, 1861, to his wife Blanche Munroe Kell discusses coastal Georgia social news.

John McIntosh Kell (1823-1900), son of John and Margery Spalding Baillie Kell of Darien, Georgia, married Julia Blanche Munroe of Macon, Georgia. During the Civil War, Kell served as an officer in the Confederate Navy. After the war, he served as Georgia's Adjutant-General from 1886 until his death in 1900.
