The Kell family lived in Sunny Side, Georgia near Griffin, Georgia. John McIntosh Kell was Captain of the Confederate ship, "Alabama." He was married to Blanche Monroe. John McIntosh Kell (1823-1900), son of John and Margery Spalding Baillie Kell of Darien, Georgia, married Julia Blanche Munroe of Macon, Georgia. During the Civil War, Kell served as an officer in the Confederate Navy. After the war, he served as Georgia's Adjutant-General from 1886 until his death in 1900.
