Title: Newark historical sketch, 1833.

This collection consists of 47 handwritten pages by Charles H. Halsey entitled An Historical Sketch of the Town of Newark, which was presented by Halsey to the Newark Young Men's Society on April 22, 1833. It covers Newark's history from the original grant of the land by King Charles II of England to his brother James, the Duke of York, in 1664 to the census of Newark in 1826. Many notable early Newark citizens receive mention in the collection, among them Robert Treat, John Curtis, Jasper and John Crane, Abner and Thomas Pierson, Samuel Swain, Lawrence Ward, Thomas and Aaron Blatchly, Edward Ball, John and Richard Harrison, Thomas Huntington, Samuel Rose, Aaron Burr and Jonathan Dickinson.

Alexander Macwhorter (1734-1807) was a Presbyterian minister of New Jersey, North Carolina, and South Carolina and trustee of the College of New Jersey (later Princeton University). The collection includes manuscript copies of extracts (22 pages) from the oration at the funeral of Macwhorter; a pastoral letter, 1766, of Elihu Spencer (1721-1784), moderator of the Presbyterian Church of New York, containing a religious interpretation of the relations of France, England, and the colonies; and minutes, 1764, of the New Jersey synod sending Macwhorter and Spencer on a southern mission.

There are also journal entries listing the fees attained from the performance of weddings and funerals. The collection also consists of one incoming letter to Macwhorter, from the Rev. Asa Hillyer, requesting a meeting of the Presbytery concerning an assignment of Rev. Israel Ward to a church in Danbury, Connecticut.

The Hornblower Family papers date from 1725 to 1953, with bulk dates of 1804-1860. The collection traces the family through three generations and consist largely of the papers of Josiah Hornblower (1729-1809); his son, Joseph C. Hornblower (1777-1864); and the latter's son, William H. Hornblower (1820-1883). The collection consists of correspondence, court documents, dockets, certificates, indentures, surveys, survey maps, estate papers, pamphlets, sermons, newspaper clippings, and genealogical research into the Hornblower, Burnet, and Butler families. Topics covered in these papers include steam engines and the Schuyler Copper Mines; New Jersey politics; Joseph C. Hornblower's career as a lawyer and judge, particularly his decision in the 1836 case concerning the Fugitive Slave Law of 1793 an his appointment to the Princeton Law School; estate settlements, particularly of those of James W. Burnett and Ann Ogilvie; Willam H. Hornblower's pastorship.

This collection consists of record books from the Presbyteries of New York from 1775-1788, Morris County from 1797-1819, and Newark from 1824-1835. The record books contain meeting minutes concerning Presbytery business functions, reports on the distribution of supplies, requests by congregations for ministers, reviews of candidates for the ministry, and proceedings concerning disciplinary actions and the sanctioning of members. Also included in the New York Presbytery records are transcripts of correspondence from ministers in the Morris County region, pointing out philosophical differences with the Presbytery and leaving to form the Morris County Synod. The Newark Presbytery record book also contains annual reports of communicants, baptisms, and collections per congregation. These record books also consist of lists of the prominent pastors in each of the organizations. They include Amzi Armstrong, David Baldwin, Andrew Bay, Ebenezer Bradford, James Caldwell, Jedidiah Chapman, Aaron Condict, Elias W.
