The papers consist almost entirely of family correspondence and financial accounts. Speeches and addresses, recipe books, sketch books, poetry books, photographs, scrap books, newsclippings, religious newsletters and genealogical information are also included. Of special interest are an early autograph collection of Revolutionary War figures, a Bremo Recess plantation ledger, 1853-1870, kept by Arthur Lee Brent and a selection of Biblical texts and expositions on slavery. Topics discussed include immigration in the late 19th-century, the rebuilding of the Rotunda, the publication of the Bedford, Va. Index, and local Virginia politics and finances, but for the most part the letters detail life at Bremo Recess and various cities where family members located, particularly Washington D.C., Wilmington, Delaware, and St. John, Nova Scotia. Over three dozen members of the Brent, Cocke, Cabell, and Campbell families are represented by at least one letter.

George Weedon (1734-1793) was Captain in the French and Indian War and a General in the American Revolutionary War. Between the two conflicts he was a prominent citizen of Fredericksburg, Virginia, operating a tavern in that city which served as a meeting place for George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, John Marshall and others to discuss politics and the future course of the American colonies.

Monroe received letters from his maternal uncle Joseph Jones advising him not to study law with George Wythe (1780), offering to pay his taxes on the Fredericksburg house (1787), about setting up a law practice in Fredericksburg (1785 and 1786); and sent letters to Jones about attending Congress and his plans to practice law (1786 and 1804). He received letters from George Weedon reporting on buying and building a house in Fredericksburg (1785), from John F. Mercer offering advice on starting a law practice (1786), and from John Dawson concerning his law practice (1798). Also included is a photocopy of the minutes of the Fredericksburg Common Council electing Monroe to the Council (1787); an indictment against Philip Waters for horse theft in the Fredericksburg district court (1789); and a commission (typed transcript) to James Monroe as assistant commonwealth attorney for Caroline, Spotsylvania, King George, Stafford, Orange, and Culpeper counties (1789).

General Hugh Mercer, who settled at Fredericksburg, Va. after serving on Braddock's Expedition and becoming a friend of George Washington, was killed at the battle of Princeton in 1777. In 1771 he became the partner of Dr. Ewen Clements and they opened a shop for drugs and medicines. By 1772, John Julian had become Mercer's partner. The ledger kept during the years of partnership with Clements and Julian in Fredericksburg and ends before Mercer entered upon a military career in 1775. About 315 Virginia families were attended by Mercer, who notes visits and prescriptions, as well as fees charged. Among his patients were Mary Ball Washington, the mother of George Washington; Charles Washington, his younger brother; Col. Fielding Lewis; James Madison; Col. Thomas Ludwell Lee; John, Henry, and William Fitzhugh; Col. John Thornton; Dr. John Brockenbrough; Mercer's brother-in-law, Capt. George Weedon; and James Taylor Page and Mann Page. A politician and arch revolutionary, Richard Henry Lee was an impassioned supporter of American independence from the mid-1760s. Born into one of the most prominent families in the colony on January 20, 1732, Lee was bred to a political life, serving in the Virginia House of Burgesses during the Stamp Act and Non-importation crises, helping convey his state into the revolutionary camp. As a delegate to the Continental Congress, Lee was the first to officially move that a declaration of independence be drafted, and he ended his public career as a principled opponent of ratification of the Constitution and as Virginia's first U.S. Senator. He died at home in Virginia in June 1794. A small, but highly valuable collection, the papers of Richard Henry Lee document the political life and activities of one of the most ardent revolutionaries in Virginia. The 0.5 linear feet of letters (193 items), most addressed to Lee, are an important resource for study of pre-Revolutionary political agitation in Virginia, the increasing connections forged between the colonies, and the political course of the war. To a lesser degree the collection documents Lee's late-life anti-federalism. Among the major correspondents are Lee's brothers Arthur and William, and such leaders in the revolutionary cause as George Washington, Samuel Adams, Charles Lee, John Adams, and Thomas Paine.

Papers, 1776-1795. Most of the material dates from 1776-1783, when Stewart served as aide to General Horatio Gates and was a colonel in the 13th Pennsylvania Regiment. There are a few musters and returns of inspection, but most of the papers consist of letters to and from Stewart. Many of them are concerned with military business, especially his efforts to get cannon and ordnance for the Northern Army early in the war, but there are also some personal letters, including several from his sister, Martha Boyd, giving him news of family and friends in Ireland. Two letters deal with his attempts to get James Murray, a cousin who was a lieutenant in the British Army, included in an exchange of prisoners. The collection includes letters from John Trumbull, Joseph Brown, George Weedon, Benjamin Bartlett, Anthony Wayne, William Alexander (Lord Stirling), Horatio Gates, and others.

This microfilm collection contributed by various libraries and historical societies contains papers of the descendents of Thomas (Scotch Tom) Nelson who emigrated from Penrith, England, to Yorktown, Va., in the 1700s. The papers are mainly those by Thomas's son William (1711-1772) and William's son Thomas (1738-1789), though papers by other Nelson family members are also included. In addition to their duties of running a plantation, both Nelsons served the state of Virginia in many ways, William as president of the council and governor (1770-71) and Thomas as delegate to the Continental Congress (1775) where he signed the Declaration of Independence, commander of troops in the American Revolution, and governor (June-Nov. 1781). The collection reflects these roles, consisting primarily of legal documents (wills, deeds, etc.) and letters concerning business or political affairs. Papers from the Duke University Library include the indenture (1739) of a Thomas Nelson, a deed (1771) and will (1772) of William Nelson, a handwritten biographical sketch (11 p.) about Thomas Nelson (1738-1789) written by his grandson Thomas Jefferson Page, and a revolutionary war letter (1781) of Thomas's. Papers from the New York Public Library include a letter (1752) of William's concerning a financial agreement and a petition (1772) to Virginia Governor Dunmore written by Patrick Henry and co-signed by William and Thomas Nelson. Also included are ten letters (1776-1786) of Thomas's which recount proceedings of the Continental Congress, itemize for the state his travel expenses 1775-1777, ask for a full account of the counties' arms and military stores, and inform various generals about the movement of British troops and the availability of men and supplies. Papers from the American Philosophical Society, Philadelphia, include Thomas's American Revolution letters (1777-1781) to and from General George Weedon. Papers from the Harvard College Library cover a wide range of topics and include a letter (1791) from Thomas Jefferson which mentions a box of books contributed by William Nelson for "public use," a list (1774) of donations from Virginia for relief of the city of Boston, letters to and from Thomas Nelson (1781, 1788), and correspondence (1837) between the Page family and Samuel Smith regarding payment to Thomas's ancestors for money he loaned the state during the revolution. Papers from the University of Michigan include letters (1771) from William Nelson to an unnamed British army officer in New York concerning Virginia recruitment efforts. Also included are Thomas Nelson's letters (1781) to and from General Nathanael Greene and a letter (1781) congratulating him on his appointment as governor signed by prominent Virginians, including Edmund Randolph. Thomas Nelson's papers from the New York Historical Society include a letter (1776) concerning his appointment to a Board of War and a frantic group of twenty letters (Jan.-Feb. 1781) written to various generals in the midst of a British invasion of Virginia. Also included are letter (June- Aug. 1781) addressed to him as governor from the Marquis de Lafayette concerning provisions for Virginia's troops. Papers from the Historical Society of Pennsylvania include William Nelson's letter (1748) concerning the ethics of a particular financial arrangement and a letter (1771) written while governor concerning a liquor trade agreement with the Indians. Also included are two letters (1777, 1779) of Lt. Col. William Nelson.

These selected papers of William Alexander, spanning the years 1767 to 1782 (with a gap between late December 1779 to June 1781), consist of correspondence sent and received, military orders and reports, and bulletins to the Continental Congress. The earliest documents relate Lord Stirling's early commercial dealings, but the bulk of the papers chronicle his activities during the American Revolution. Alexander's baptism by fire emerges from the records of numerous campaigns and conflicts; the Battles of Long Island and Trenton in 1776, and of Brandywine the following year are well documented. Also covered in the Alexander Papers are civil and military affairs in New Jersey; military intelligence and troop movements in New Jersey and the Hudson Highlands; communication with enemy forces; and various matters of army administration. Alexander's frontier command is particularly well documented. Notable correspondents include the most of the military and political leaders of the new state and national governments, as well as prominent merchants in New York and New Jersey. Exemplifying the caliber of the material is a report dated June 12, 1781, from General Washington to a board of general officers at New Windsor. In this signed document, Washington outlines plans for a Franco-American assault on New York and requests advice on seven specific points from his officer corps. Items have each been inlaid into two folio volumes. The papers are extensively described in Sotheby's catalog "The Library of H. Bradley Martin, Highly Important Printed and Manuscript Americana: Auction Wednesday, January 31, 1990" (Lots 2506-2553) and are available to researchers on microfilm. Additional manuscripts relating to William Alexander can be found in the extensive Alexander Papers and the Rutherfurd Papers as well as in other gatherings of William Alexander's own correspondence, in The New-York Historical Society Manuscripts Department.

The letter by Jean-Baptiste-Donatien de Vimeur, comte de Rochambeau, is incomplete (last leaf only). The volume has indices of names (p. 353-356) and places (p. 357-360). Richard Henry Lee Papers, 1763-1823

Title: Richard Henry Lee Papers 1763-1823

A politician and arch revolutionary, Richard Henry Lee was an impassioned supporter of American independence from the mid-1760s. Born into one of the most prominent families in the colony on January 20, 1732, Lee was bred to a political life, serving in the Virginia House of Burgesses during the Stamp Act and Non-importation crises, helping convey his state into the revolutionary camp. As a delegate to the Continental Congress, Lee was the first to officially move that a declaration of independence be drafted, and he ended his public career as a principled opponent of ratification of the Constitution and as Virginia's first U.S. Senator. He died at home in Virginia in June 1794. A small, but highly valuable collection, the papers of Richard Henry Lee document the political life and activities of one of the most ardent revolutionaries in Virginia. The 0.5 linear feet of letters (193 items), most addressed to Lee, are an important resource for study of pre-Revolutionary political agitation in Virginia, the increasing connections forged between the colonies, and the political course of the war. To a lesser degree the collection documents Lee's late-life anti-federalism. Among the major correspondents are Lee's brothers Arthur and William, and such leaders in the revolutionary cause as George Washington, Samuel Adams, Charles Lee, John Adams, and Thomas Paine.
