Genealogical notes, 1879-1880.

Newspaper clippings from the Standard, Richmond, Va. concerning the Mercer family. The earliest clipping, 15 March 1879, is a genealogy of the descendants of John Mercer (1704-1768) by Robert Alonzo Brock. The later clipping, 17 April 1880, reprints a letter sent by Hugh Mercer (d. 1837) to Dr. Beverley Randolph Wellford recounting a celebration held each Christmas to celebrate American victory at Trenton, N.J. in 1776 and text of a song written by George Weedon, "Christmas Day in '76."

George Weedon was born in late 1734 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. Weedon was appointed an ensign in the Virginia militia during the French and Indian War and rose to the rank of lieutenant in 1757 and to the rank of captain lieutenant in 1762. After the war, he moved to Fredericksburg, Virginia, and married Catharine Gordon (d. 1797). He operated a tavern in Fredericksburg. Wirt County was named for William Wirt, who gained fame in Virgtinia as a lawyer and perhaps is best known for his role in the prosecution of Aaron burr for treason. It was created in 1848 from sections of Wood and Jackson Counties. Wirt County was one of the fifty western Virginia counties to form the state of West Virginia in 1863.
