Correspondence, manuscripts, and documents relating to the printing firm of John Nichols and Son, covering a period from 1713, when the original firm of William Bowyer, the Elder (1663-1737), was burned, until the death of John Gough Nichols in 1873. The correspondence concerns primarily the social and domestic affairs of John Nichols (1745-1826) and of his family from 1766 to 1812. Scattered letters from business associates and minor authors are included, among them a group of letters from John Pridden (1758-1825), author and antiquary. The correspondence of John Bowyer Nichols (1779-1863) concerns the Nichols firm from 1799 to 1855. There are also several letters of, and relating to, William Bowyer (1699-1777), the senior partner of John Nichols. The collection also contains a volume of letters of condolence written at the time of John Nichols' death. The manuscripts in the collection consist primarily of the poetry of John Nichols, much of which was published in newspapers of the late 18th century. The manuscripts of John Bowyer Nichols concern his father and family. There are also contracts, bills, receipts, accounts, pamphlets, broadsides, engravings, and a group of 277 portraits.

Alleyn; (173) to Collier's copy of a masque with emendations in Chapman's hand; (26) to information about Churchyard; (32, 156) discuss his editions of Coleridge lectures; (127) to his having Drayton's copy of the Faerie Queene; (153) to [Forman's] diary describing Shakespearean performances; (34) to Greene's Menaphon; some to his work on John Bunyan; (126, 127) to a misplaced Southey manuscript. Shakespearean references include: authorship of Edward III; biographical information; facsimiles of plays; alleged forgeries; his house; his knowledge of law; monuments; portraits, and criticism. Scattered references to attacks on Collier occur in the Ebsworth letters and elsewhere; several concern the Perkins Folio; enclosed in (167) are copies of 16 title pages taken from the "corrected folio of 1632." Letters contain numerous references to his associations with the Camden Society, the Percy Society, and the Shakespeare Society. (216-223) are newspaper clippings, 1859-1860, discussing the authenticity of emendations in the Perkins Folio; with them is Collier's unpublished draft of his reply, March 25, 1860, to Sir Frederic Madden's letter in the Times.

The Nichols family correspondence consists primarily of business letters received by John Nichols, John Bowyer Nichols, and John Gough Nichols. Many of the letters are from authors whose work appeared in the popular and influential Gentleman's Magazine. Subjects include articles submitted for the magazine; letters to the editor and corrections of previous articles; business arrangements; and subscription and advertising negotiations. Many correspondents also discuss antiquarian and historical topics, including archaeological finds and numismatics, often in the context of proposing articles for Gentleman's Magazine or longer works for publication by Nichols & Co. Major correspondents include John Yonge Akerman, Thomas Blore, William Bray, Sir Egerton Brydges, Sir Henry Ellis, Maria Cantwell, Sir Richard Colt Hoare, Joseph Palmer, and Sir Charles George Young. There is also a small amount of personal and family correspondence among the printers themselves and with other members of the Nichols family.

Unique publisher's copy of Smith's volume, published posthumously by John Bowyer Nichols and Son in 1839. The volume contains the thirty etchings and accompanying text for The Cries of London, and an additional thirty-seven etchings of criers published by Smith in 1815-1816. Letters to Nichols from Smith's family containing bibliographical information, written shortly before publication of the volume, have been bound in. Hand-written drafts for the text of The Cries of London, perhaps written by Francis Douce, are bound in at the end of the volume. A loose copy of the print Henry Dinsdale, 1815, is also included.
