Bowles papers, 1827-1935 (bulk 1827-1842)

Consists mainly of letters from Bowles to the printers, John Bowyer Nichols and John Gough Nichols, 1828-42, concerning Bowles' works, including "The Parochial History of Bremhill." These were recopied into a manuscript volume dated 1935, which contains an index to subjects and names in the letters. The papers also include one letter from Bowles to Henry Hughes regarding a mistake that Hughes discovered in one of Bowles' poems; one letter from Bowles to Edward John Bury asking if Uvedale Price may see Bury's drawings and paintings; a copy of a letter from John Bowyer Nichols to Bowles regarding the printing of "Hermes Britannica"; and one letter from Edward Duke to John Bowyer Nichols about Duke's disagreement with Bowles. There are also letters (1914-15) from Garland Greever to John Rogers Rees about Greever's dissertation on Bowles.

John Bowyer Nichols was born in London, 1779, and went on to be schooled at St Paul's School, London. In 1796 he entered his father's printing office and began part editorship of The Gentleman's Magazine , of which, by 1837, he was sole proprietor.
