Title: John Vaughan papers, 1768 - Circa 1936

The collection of about 850 items covers the period from 1782 to c. 1936, with the bulk dating to the 1780s to 1840s. The collection is divided into four series. Series I contains correspondence relating to a wide variety of topics, including French and English politics, business, trade, religious matters, and personal affairs. Many of the items are letters of introduction. There is also information on John Vaughan’s immigration to America, Joseph Priestley, vaccines and inoculation (with Jefferson's comments on the same), Vaughan's business in Philadelphia, and the American Philosophical Society. Also included in this series are 2 boxes with copies of Vaughan correspondence as well as miscellaneous notes by E. W. Madeira, gathered in the course of his research on Vaughan in the 1930s. Series II consists of three volumes. Included are two of Vaughan's commonplace books. One, entitled, "J. Vaughan's book," May 17, 1779 (47 pp., in Latin; 870/L34), includes mostly Latin notations. The other commonplace book, dated 1783 (ca. 66 pp.; B V 462.c), includes comments on several prominent Americans, such as Benjamin Rush and David Rittenhouse, as well as American society generally. The third volume is a copybook with thirty letters spanning the period 1784 to 1801 (B V462.1). Series III includes material relating to Vaughan's administration of the estate of the Philadelphia merchant Samuel Merrick, 1796-1822 (Vaughan-Merrick Papers, B V462.m; 2 boxes). Series IV consists of correspondence between Vaughan and the DuPont Co. for which he served as agent (B V462.4; photocopies of 73 letters).

Tudor, William, 1750-1819. Guarantee of financial support for student James Savage, signed by William Tudor and John Cooper, July 25, 1799.

Title: Guarantee of financial support for student James Savage, signed by William Tudor and John Cooper, July 25, 1799.

This legal agreement, a guarantee of financial support for entering student James Savage (A.B. 1803), was signed on July 25, 1799 by his two guarantors, William Tudor and John Cooper. The document was also signed by two witnesses, William Tudor's sons John Henry Tudor and Frederic Tudor. The agreement specifies that, in the event of Savage's failure to settle all financial obligations to the President and Fellows of Harvard College during the course of his studies, the two guarantors would be responsible for a payment of two hundred ounces of silver. It seems that the Tudors and Cooper were cousins of Savage, thus explaining their desire to assure his entry to Harvard by entering into this financial obligation.

Tudor family papers II, 1765-1862

A small collection of misc. papers of the Tudor family of Boston, in particular William Tudor, a Boston lawyer. His papers include letters written from loyalists Mather Byles of Halifax, Robert Auchmuty and William Vassall of London regarding Tudor's assistance in recovering their confiscated property in Mass. following their evacuation from Boston during the Revolution. The collection also includes misc. bills and receipts to Tudor, a few items of his son Frederic, two letters from Jared Sparks to Tudor's wife Delia, and a letter from Charles Sumner to Euphemia F. Tudor (Mrs. Frederic, 1862).

The portion of the Emmet Collection housed in the Manuscripts and Archives Division consists of approximately 10,800 historical manuscripts relating chiefly to the period prior to, during, and following the American Revolution. The collection contains letters and documents by the signers of the Declaration of Independence as well as nearly every prominent historical figure of the period.

Papers of the Palfrey family of New England. The material of this collection encompasses over 150 years of American history and many items of interest besides those documenting the life and works of John Gorham Palfrey, who is its central figure. A few of these may be briefly mentioned here. The papers of William Palfrey include letters between John Wilkes and the Sons of Liberty and William Palfrey's personal correspondence with Wilkes at the time of the latter's imprisonment in 1769-1770, including Palfrey's description of the Boston Massacre. William Palfrey's business account and financial papers are extensive and range in subject from accounts of trade with Virginia in 1763 to the disposition of funds of the Continental Army during the time Palfrey was Pay Master General. His close association and correspondence with John Hancock should be noted. Several interesting items pertain to the dispute between Hancock and the Boston printer, John Mein, which resulted in Thomas Longman's suit against Mein and the latter's imprisonment. The papers of John Palfrey deal mainly with his business affairs and the management of his plantation at Attakapas. However, several letters by his sons, Edward, William Taylor, and Henry William give first-hand accounts of battles in the war of 1812. Letters to John Gorham Palfrey from over 1000 corespondents form the largest single section in the collection. Of special importance are 377 letters from Jared Sparks and 148 letters from Charles Sumner.

Correspondence and documents, including family letters primarily from Frederic Tudor to his brother William and from William Tudor Jr. to his father. Correspondence also includes thirty-four letters, 1789-1801, to William Tudor Sr. written from England by Sarah Troutbeck, daughter of John Troutbeck, King's reader at King's Chapel, Boston, who had returned to England during the Revolution. Another group of nineteen letters, written in 1823 from Washington by William Lee (1772-1840) to William Tudor Jr. comment on political events. Other family papers include college papers written at Harvard by John Henry Tudor, another son of William Tudor Sr. and some documents relating to John Tudor, the father of William Tudor Sr. Other documents include powers of attorney for William Tudor. Sr., often relating to the administration of loyalist properties, and papers relating to his tenure as Massachusetts secretary of state.

Letters from John Adams and others to Boston lawyer William Tudor. Letters from Adams, 1774-1801, were written from Philadelphia while Adams was a member of the Continental Congress (1774-77) and concern the break from England, the progress of the war, and the status of the Continental Army where Tudor served as Judge Advocate General, and other political concerns; and from Paris, Amsterdam (1781), and Auteuil (1785). Letters from New York (1789) as vice-president concern the philosophy behind the new government, the relationship of the states to a central government, and other political matters; and from Washington as president (1800-01) on national political matters, in particular his relationship with Alexander Hamilton. The collection also contains one letter each from Abigail Adams (1774), George Washington (1788), Thomas Jefferson (1823), and two letters from Henry Knox (1777, 1790).

Title: Papers of John Henry Tudor

John Henry Tudor (1782-1802) was the son of a prominent Boston family who died two years after graduating from Harvard College. These papers document his studies, recreational activities, thoughts, and feelings while an undergraduate at Harvard College from 1796 to 1800, as well as his life outside of college. They include letters to his brothers, William and Frederic, and to his father, William; copies of letters to friend and classmate Moody Noyes; a book of student themes on various topics; a mathematical notebook; a diary; and additional papers related to, but not created by, Tudor.

Collection consists principally of letters, draft letters and letters received, chronologically arranged. The letters illustrate William Tudor's activities as a merchant in Boston and the development of the ice business with his brother, Frederic, his travels in Europe, the rise of the North American Review and Tudor's literary endeavors, and finally, his difficult role as U.S. Consul in Peru during the war of liberation from Spain. Papers include Tudor's account of a trip through Middlesex Co. into N.H., ca. 1794, an extensive letters to his father, 1797, reporting on affairs in Boston; letters, 1798-1801, mostly from a trip to France ; letters, draft letters, 1811-1812, to Stephen Higginson, James Monroe, Josiah Quincy, Frederic Tudor and others; material relating to the North American Review; letters received, 1815-1823 from Timothy Pickering, John Pickering, John Vaughan, John Davis, William Lee, Robert Hallowell Gardiner, William Roscoe, Samuel Gilman, Robert Walsh and others; and letters received as consul, 1823-1826, from family members and Boston merchants mostly seeking Tudor's assistance as U.S. Consul recovering confiscated cargo, ships and imprisioned crew.

A small collection of papers of the Tudor family of Boston, the bulk of which are letters between William Tudor (1750-1819) and Delia Jarvis (later Mrs. William Tudor) during their courtship from 1773-78. She was a reluctant participant in his courtship efforts (although she married him in 1778) which he largely wrote while Judge Advocate of the Continental Army under Washington. In addition to his personal feelings, often manifested as concern for her personal safety in Boston during the siege, Tudor commented on news from the field, particularly from New York during the siege in 1776 and from Washington's headquarters in New Jersey. The collection also includes two letters from William to his father John from N.Y. (1776) and a series of letters from Delia Tudor to her son William (1779-1830) mostly concerning family matters.
