John Cooper was born 13 Dec 1765 Boston MA. He removed to what is now Lubec, Me. in 1787 and then to Machias in 1790. He was High Sheriff (1790-1820) and Treasurer (1803-9) of Washington County, Me. as well as Brigadier-Generalof the 2d Brigade, 10th Division, Mass. Militia (1803-1811). In 1822, he moved to Cooper, Me., the town named after him, where he lived until his death on 17 Nov 1845 [see Frederick Tuckerman's "Thomas Cooper, of Boston, and his descendants", NEHGR 44[1890]:58-59].
