Collection of theatrical correspondence and ephemera, 1697-1930
Title:
Collection of theatrical correspondence and ephemera 1697-1930
The William Appleton collection consists of letters, handwritten manuscripts, "penny plains" and "two-pence coloured" materials, which were small portraits of actors created for the toy theater trade, a once-popular form of home entertainment. The collection encompasses the late 17th century up through the mid-20th century, although the bulk of the material falls between the mid-18th century and the mid-19th century. The oldest item is a letter from actress Elizabeth Barry to a Lady Lisbourn, dated October 25, 1697. The latest item is a letter from playwright George Bernard Shaw to a J. T. Grien, dated November 28, 1930. The collection contains many letters from prominent theatrical figures, primarily of the English stage, including Ira Aldridge, Dion Boucicault, Edward Gordon Craig, David Garrick, Sir Henry Irving, Edmund Kean, William Charles Macready, Bernard Shaw, Sarah Siddons, Dame Ellen Terry, and others. Also included are black and white portraits known as "penny plains," and color portraits known as "two-pence coloured," depicting actors and actresses of the day in their best known roles. These images were intended for home use in puppet theater-type settings, and most date from the early to mid-1800s, though some date as far back as 1799.

Johnson, Samuel, 1709-1784. Samuel Johnson manuscripts, 1725-1784.
Title:
Samuel Johnson manuscripts, 1725-1784.
This collection consists of items in Johnson's hand, and early transcripts of his manuscripts. Highlights include a 77-page diary which Johnson kept sporadically from 1765 to 1784; a 1784 deed of his teapot to his servant Francis Barber; and the last known document in his hand, a pension receipt he signed on the day of his death in 1784. The collection includes partial drafts of many of his works, including Irene; Lives of the English Poets (biographies of Pope and Rowe); London; A Plan of a Dictionary of the English Language; and The Vanity of Human Wishes. It also includes his partial translation of Sallust's Catiline; annotations of documents by Giuseppe Baretti, Richard Bathurst, and Hester Lynch Piozzi; notes on theologians Samuel Clarke and Styan Thirlby; and documents he wrote on behalf of Mary Dunn Collier Flint, Henry Thrale, and the widowed mother of Joseph Hunt. The collection also includes significant early transcripts of documents authored by Johnson, such as several pages of extracts which James Boswell made from Johnson's lost earlier diary; Boswell's transcript of Johnson's annotations on Dalrymple's Annals of Scotland; and two fragments prepared by an amanuensis for Johnson's Dictionary. Most of the collection is in English, but a substantial portion is written in, or translated from, Latin.

Title:
[Mathematical exercise book] [ca. 1725]
Manuscript mathematical exercise book with additional poetry, riddles and childish doodles in other, later hands. Written in a calligraphic hand, with embellishments and illustrations, the mathematical text, which demonstrates a variety of practical applications for arithmetic, is incomplete. Many pages bear only headings without any mathematical tables or examples below. A slightly later hand has copied poetry and riddles on the blank versos of many of the pages, while an even later child's hand (or hands) has made numerous pencil doodles in the latter half of the volume, including lists of flowers and trees, pictures of people and houses and an alphabet. Some of the mathematical examples shown feature the years 1723, 1724 and 1725.

Stocker,. A collection of poems compiled by Stocker [manuscript], [ca.1750-1780].
Title:
A collection of poems compiled by Stocker [manuscript], [ca.1750-1780].
Contains some 260 poems. A few are attributed to persons of no note, none to any poet of reputation. It is probable that most of the pieces are original compositions of the compiler, who from many references to Portsmouth, and other places in its vicinity, may be supposed to have lived in that region. Persons named Stocker are several times mentioned and a Richard Stocker, perhaps the person whose autograph appears on the fly-leaf, is referred to on pp. 236-and 340-41 as the writer's son. The poet, however, calls an apothecary named Stocker a quack (p. 217). Many of the poems are of purely local interest. Members of a family named Missing figure as subject, addressee, or composer of at least 12 pieces. Among the contents are a number of prologues and epilogues for plays, including Henry VIII and Othello, all written for special performances, presumably local (Tamerlane at Portsmouth, 1753), and some, at least, amateur. A Mr. Missing is named as author and speaker of two.

A glossary to Shakespeare, copied by [Thomas Percy] and with additions by him [manuscript], ca. 1769.
Many of the entries correspond to those in the glossary of his 1744 edition of Shakespeare's Works, some are among the additions found in the edition of 1770-1771. Certain entries are not in either edition. A pencil note opp. p. 343 states that the additional notes written in pencil were by Sir John Hawkins. Prefaced by A short account of Shakespeare from Mr. Rowe; Miscellanious observations from [J.] Upton's [Critical] Observations on Shakespeare; and the General Heads or Rules, extracted from the same book.

Autograph letters signed from Benjamin Victor, Dublin and London, to various people [manuscript], 1759-1774.
Correspondents: [Charles] Macklin and Mrs. Pigott. The letter of 1759 discusses terms for Macklin's and his daughter [Maria's] appearance [at the Smock Alley Theatre] and suggests certain comedies. The letter of 1774 advises Mrs. Pigott on her acting of the heroine in "Jane Shore" and includes his "Prologue for the Tragedy of Jane Shore, to be perform'd in Staffordshire by Ladies and Gentlemen," beginning "Our Annals tell, to grace the Drama's page..." The letter also discusses "the Affair of the Colonies!" The letter apparently was written after the one printed in his Original letters...1776, I, 352.

Blackmore, Richard, Sir, d. 1729. [Commonplace book]
Title:
[Commonplace book] [17--?]
Manuscript commonplace book compiled during the late-17th and the 18th centuries, containing poetry, religious works, historical works, mathematical tables, geographical information, scientific facts and vocabulary words. The volume contains several different hands and there appear to have been perhaps 3 central compilers of the works excerpted therein. Many pages are crowded with text written in the margins and around passages entered at earlier dates. There are no signs as to the identities of the compilers, though a 20th century bookseller's description in the front of the volume mentions that it was purchased from a family library in Wiltshire.
