Lyman Beecher, including list of subscribers, persons owed, and instrument of conditions; and marriage certificates (1820-1823 and 1824-1825) consisting of records of the marriages performed by Beecher, including records of Litchfield Female Academy students who married Litchfield Law School students.

Colman, Myra A. Litchfield area family papers, 1794-1860.

Title: Litchfield area family papers, 1794-1860.

About half of this collection relates to the Deming family of Litchfield, Connecticut. Julius Deming is represented by a court case against Jedediah Strong, 1797, a contract for building a barn (1735) and a house (1733), deeds, and financial records, including a bill for fruit trees. Lucretia Deming served as an executrix of the estates of Charles and Dorothy Deming, and her correspondence with George C. Woodruff and financial records document this role, 1852-1856. Charles and Henry Perkins invested in land in Rochester, New York, as illustrated by their deeds. Also among their papers is a description of a burial plot with a drawing of the coffin placement. Not related to either family, but equally interesting, are the letters of George C. Woodruff to Calvin W. Philleo on political topics, 1849. Sally Pierce kept a school in Litchfield, and Myra A. Colman kept a diary while a student there in 1818. There are also a receipt for payment from Julius Deming and an account with Miss Scovel for her tuition. An assortment of Litchfield-related documents include James Gould's request for admission for his son to Yale, 1814; a petition for hay scales on the green, 1828; an apprenticeship agreement in which John Stone was to learn the art of clockmaking with Tertius Turner, 1831; a complaint against Reuben Lawrence, "Indian or mulatto", 1810; and deeds of Alexander Catlin, 1778, 1792. Finally, the collection includes orders for payment by the Milton School Society, 1812-1817.

Correspondence of Lyman Beecher (1775-1863), Catharine Esther Beecher (1800-1878), Esther Beecher, Eunice White (Bullard) Beecher (1813-1897), Harriet (Porter) Beecher (?-1835), Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887), James C. Beecher (1828-1886), Lydia (Beals) Jackson Beecher (1789-1869), Calvin Ellis Stowe (1802-1886), Eliza Tyler Stowe (1836-?), Harriet Elizabeth (Beecher) Stowe (1811-1896), Harriet Beecher Stowe II (1836-?), and Susan (Munroe) Stowe, much of which contains family news, stories, and comments about the times. Also included is material pertaining to Isabella (Beecher) Hooker (1822-1907), and other family members, as well as Lyman Beecher Stowe's correspondence and research on Charlotte (Perkins) Gilman and actress Charlotte Cushman. Bulk of the collection pertains to Harriet (Beecher) Stowe, her husband, Calvin and their children; their personal and professional correspondence includes letters from publishers and prominent people Harriet Stowe met in England.

Consists primarily of letters to and from the children of John Pierce and his first wife (Mary Paterson Pierce), his second wife (Mary Goodman Pierce), and his brother James Pierce. Correspondents represented include: Polly Pierce, Abraham Bradley, Jonathan Burrall, Samuel Hodgdon, Horace Reed, Frederick Sheldon, Jedediah Strong, Elkanah Tisdale, Jonathan Trumbull, Jabez Wetmore, David Witherspoon, and Oliver Wolcott. Subjects represented include: the yellow fever epidemic in New York City; the capture of Fort Ticonderoga in 1777; medicine in the U.S. during the 18th century; banks and banking; slavery and plantations in South Carolina; the British and Continental armies; General John Burgoyne; desertions of soldiers during the Revolutionary War; the death of Alexander Hamilton; women's fashion and tea sets from Liverpool, China, and India; the Treaty of Ghent; a visit by the Marquis de Lafayette; the coal mining industry in Pennsylvania; President Jefferson, Congress, and the White House; a performance of Shakespeare's "Othello"; Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Emile; the Reeve School; Congress's attempt to disband the Connecticut regiment of the Continental Army; West Point; and criticism of Thomas Paine's "Common Sense."

Brace and Bunce family. Brace and Bunce family papers, ca. 1818-1860.

Title: Brace and Bunce family papers, ca. 1818-1860.

This collection contains schoolbooks, friendship albums, and a review of sermons kept by Frances Ann Brace Bunce between 1818 and 1827. Some of the school work dates from Frances' time at the Litchfield Female Academy. In her geography book she included the school's 1822 rules. Account books, a diary, letters, and a friendship album, of James Marvin Bunce, Frances' husband, are included, as are a friendship album of James' sister Emma Bunce, a commonplace book of James and Frances' daughter-in-law Laura Dibble Bunce, and copybooks and diaries of Frances' aunt, Electa Kimberly. After Frances' death, Lydia Huntley Sigourney wrote memorial verses, which are also part of the collection. Sigourney, prior to her marriage, was one of Frances Bunces's teachers. Frances' copy of Lydia Huntley's "Letters to the Young Ladies under her Care" is included, too. Electa Kimberly copied some of Frances' letters and photocopies are in the collection. A seemingly unrelated piece is a printed work titled "The Old Thirteen English Colonies."

Brace and Bunce family. Brace and Bunce family papers, 1813-1859.

Title: Brace and Bunce family papers, 1813-1859.

A collection of correspondence sent among members of the Brace and Bunce families. Arranged chronologically, letters were sent to and from Frances Ann Brace Bunce, her aunts Electa Kimberly and Fanny Brace Hall, grandparents Jonathan and Ann Brace, her mother Lucy Brace, her husband James Bunce, and others. Other pieces of interest within the collection include a catalog of students and faculty at Hartford Female Seminary, 1829, and school work from Frances' time at the Litchfield Female Academy. Frances' letters were written from Hartford and Litchfield. Her Aunt Fannie wrote from Middlebury, Vermont. Later letters were sent by Bunces in Oswego, New York and Boston.
