The United States Office of Naval Research accounts for a large portion of the material. Other granting agencies include the National Cancer Institute, the National Science Foundation, and the United States Atomic Energy Commission. There are two folders of material about the National Research Council's RCA Fellowship that Anderson received in 1940. Also in this series are reviews of other people's grant applications that Anderson wrote for various agencies, including the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the United States Atomic Energy Commission. Series IV (6.5 linear ft.) contains Anderson's typewritten and handwritten outlines, preparatory notes, research, graphs and figures, drafts, and some galley proofs for articles. There are some notes for lectures, as well as several reviews of books. Some of the works are co-authored with colleagues and students. This series includes several early papers from the 1930s; the earliest is an article in German, "Ein Neues Drehprismenverfahren zur Photographischen Ermittlung der Dispersion. II. Mitteilung uber Refraktion und Dispersion von Kristallen," from 1935. There are also several historical treatments of electron microscopy, including "The First Years of the Electron Microscope in the United States, 1940-52," "Reflections on Phage Genetics," and Anderson's biographical memoir of Jack Schultz ("Jack Schultz, May 7, 1904 - April 29, 1971"). Series V (1.5 linear ft.) contains articles, notes, reports, and abstracts written by colleagues and students of Anderson. Some authors are represented by two or more manuscripts, including Helen Gay, Hartmut Hoffmann-Berling, Francois Jacob, Andrzej W. Kozinski, Bruce R. Levin, Peter C. Nowell, Jonathan T. Ou, Lee D. Simon, Donald H. Walker, Jr., and Nobuto Yamamoto. Most of the works are scientific in nature, although there are two historical articles by Lily E. Kay. Series VI (2.75 linear ft.) contains loose notes and notebooks that include notes from experiments (e.g., "Growth Requirements of T2, T4A, T6"); notes taken by Anderson at Cold Spring Harbor and at other symposia; and course notes from Anderson's days at California Institute of Technology (e.g., "Atomic Physics"). Series VII (19 linear ft.) contains prints and negatives of electron micrographs that Anderson took of viruses and drosophila, among other specimens. Some of the micrographs were used for articles, while others are unpublished. The prints are of varying sizes, including many that are oversized. There are a large number of unidentified micrographs. There are also a few photographs of Anderson and his colleagues.

Thomas F. Anderson (1911-1991) was a biophysicist and electron microscopist whose research included Raman spectroscopy; the physiology of yeast; the biological effects of radiation; the biological applications of electron microscopy; and the genetics of bacteria, bacterial viruses, and bacteriophage. He was a Professor of Biophysics at the University of Pennsylvania and a Senior Member of the Institute for Cancer Research in Fox Chase.

The collection is important primarily for its intellectual and social history. With the exception of the reprints, lectures, and college notes, there is little substantive scientific information. It is made up largely of correspondence (1872-1978) which is primarily social in content, and includes a significant quantity of family letters and history. Darrow's wide international circle of friends in both the arts and sciences reflect such events in the correspondence as the Depression, World War II, the influx of foreign scientists into the United States, the impact of the development of the atomic bomb within the physics community, the increasing participation of women in science, Presidential campaigns, and political developments in both the United States and Europe. There is a small series of professional correspondence from Darrow's office at Bell Laboratories (1955-1956) which deals mainly with his retirement and his work as Secretary of the American Physical Society. Correspondents include Raymond T. Birge, Niels Bohr, Léon Brillouin, Clinton Joseph Davisson, Arthur J. Dempster, Jesse W. Du Mond, Enrico Fermi, Ernest O. Lawrence, Leona Marshall, R. A. Millikan, George Mulfinger, Manuel Vallarta, John H. Van Vleck, and Ralph W. Wyckoff among many others. Testimonial letters from his retirement represent some of the most imporant names in the international scientific community. The biographical materials include family histories, wills, obituaries and some of Darrow's childhood writings. The diaries (1902-1972) contain accounts of travels, appointments and daily activities. There are copies of many of Darrow's lectures, including an annotated copy of his Lowell Lectures of 1935, manuscripts, and a complete set of reprints of his published articles. Darrow's college notes include those from his Freshman physics course with R. A. Millikan in 1908 at the University of Chicago. Random financial information includes tax forms, investment records, contracts and family estate settlement papers. Photographs include family and professional pictures. Among the correspondence are approximately 800 picture postcards (1917-1976) from the United States and around the world.

For his pioneering research on the link between viruses and cancer, the pathologist Francis Peyton Rous was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1966. Working primarily at the Rockefeller Institute after 1909, Rous first came to notice for his theoretical construction of the first blood bank for use in France during World War I, a plan ultimately implemented by his assistant, Oswald H. Robertson. Subsequently, he left an important imprint on the development of experimental medicine, partly through his own research on the origins of cancer and his administrative activities at the Rockefeller, but also as editor of the from 1921-1970. The Rous Papers include correspondence, lectures, articles, reports, laboratory records, reprints, and photographs that document all aspects of the life and work of Peyton Rous. Reflecting his work at the Institute are letters of colleagues, information on assistants, and reports to the directors (1909-1959).
